Growing up in the northeast, I was very familiar with cold weather. While I didn’t exactly enjoy winter – especially, when my mother sent me off to elementary school in a coat so puffy I couldn’t move my arms – I did love the snow. With enough snow, hopefully, came the all-anticipated snow day. When I was little, cancelled school meant that I could sleep in, play in the snow, and eat these perfect snow day foods.
1. Waffles
After a morning of shoveling the sidewalks, I would come inside to be greeted by a delicious breakfast. While a busy weekday morning typically involved toaster waffles, a special occasion like a snow day called for the real deal, like these churro waffles.
2. Pancakes
For those who didn’t have the luxury of a waffle iron growing up, pancakes were the next go-to. While I usually ate classic pancakes with maple syrup, this Nutella pancake tower looks killer.
3. Hot chocolate with marshmallows
Paired with curling up with a good book (or Netflix), hot chocolate is the perfect snow day drink, especially topped with white fluffy puffs of sugar. Go classic or try this grown up hot chocolate.
4. Soup
Perfect for warming up any kid post-snowman building, soup makes for an ideal snow day lunch. Make this better-than-the-can tomato soup or this easy slow cooker chicken noodle soup.
5. Grilled cheese
To make lunch heartier—to get enough energy for the afternoon snowball fight, of course—pair your soup with a grilled cheese. Take it to the next level with this French onion grilled cheese, or if you’re stuck in your dorm room, make grilled cheese with an iron.
6. Chocolate chip cookies
Chocolate chip cookies were a sweet treat to wrap up a long day of play. Break out the slice and bake or make them from scratch.
For me, snow days meant a lot more than no school. Try making these foods perfect snow day foods on your next snow day for a taste of nostalgia.
