The East Coast versus West Coast feud goes far deeper than just hip-hop and rap music. Food bragging rights is where the real rivalry is. A famous conflict between the coasts has been In-N-Out Burger versus Shake Shack. But while the spotlight has been on these brand names, one major burger spot has gotten severely overlooked; Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers.
That’s right, we’re dragging the Midwest into this feud. Founded in Wichita, Kansas in 2002 as a simple little burger place, Freddy’s has now grown to have over 220 stores in the US. Being that it originated in the Midwest, it’s fair to say that the restaurant is more predominant there and in the South as well.
But with the constant growth this business experiences, you’re sure to find one in your own neighborhood soon. In order to prepare you for that day, let us be the ones to tell you what you’ve been missing out on.
1. Freddy’s Fry Sauce
Forget Chick-fil-A Sauce. This is legitimately condiment crack. You can dip anything in this sauce from burgers and fries to resorting to your fingers because it’s just that addicting. And now there’s a jalapeño version available for those of us who like a little spice in our life.
2. Freddy’s Sauce
Let’s be very clear: there is a difference between Fry Sauce and Freddy’s Sauce. Freddy’s Sauce is similar to thousand island dressing while Fry Sauce is an experience all its own. However, both are equally as addicting, so tread carefully.
3. Frozen Custard Concretes
Ice cream will never taste the same again after you’ve tried this custard. It’s richer, creamier, and overall a lot more filling, so you don’t have to eat as much to be satisfied.
Concretes are made of custard and your choice of toppings blended together. There are so many options to pick from on the menu (I’m talking like 30 choices people) so you can really make it all your own. Personally, we’re fans of the limited-time Pumpkin Pie Concrete. It’s like eating a frozen Pumpkin Spice Latte.
4. Steakburgers Versus Hamburgers
There’s not a lot of a variation between a burger from Wendy’s, McDonald’s, or Burger King, probably because they’re all hamburgers. Let me introduce you to steakburgers, because they are a whole new ballgame.
Freddy’s patties are made from 100% pure, premium ground beef, not the sketchy, cheap meat a lot of fast food places are rumored to use. Plus, these patties are cooked using Freddy’s magical seasoning salt. Trust us, it makes a difference.
5. Freddy’s Fries
We consider ourselves true fast food French fries connoisseurs. The quality of the fries can make or break your meal. Freddy’s shoestring fries with that lovely special seasoning are everything you would hope for from fried potatoes and then some.
The only downside is that because they’re so thin, you feel like you can eat five servings in one sitting and we just do not need that kind of calorie intake in our lives.
6. Exceptional Customer Service
There aren’t many fast food restaurants where you’ll get this kind of hospitality. The staff here has a reputation for going above and beyond to make sure that when customers (excuse us, *guests*) leave, they are truly satisfied with their experience.
7. Comfy Atmosphere
Freddy’s has a super retro, throwback vibe to it, but it actually works in a non-ironic way. From the red leather-covered booths to the “’70s on 7” playing on the speakers, you feel like you’re a in a scene from “Footloose” or “Grease.”
It’s a very family friendly environment, but also a cute place for a casual date or even just grabbing a bite to eat with your friends between classes.
8. Freddy’s Hot Dogs
Freddy’s may specialize in burgers, but they also make bomb hot dogs. If you’re like us and love meat, you can get the Combo Number 4, which gives you that savory steakburger and a juicy hot dog.
9. Freddy’s Student Discount
Broke college students exist. It’s a fact of life, and Freddy’s recognizes the struggle of students. That’s why when you flash your student ID you get a whole 10% off the cost of your meal, making Freddy’s a cheap and tasty treat.
If you ask us, we’d say the Midwest is the one to watch in the burger game. You can check out the full menu here, for your further viewing pleasure. Look out Shake Shack and In-N-Out, Freddy’s is putting up some stiff competition.
