SōDOUGH’s mission statement is to simplify the way we eat the things we love the most. They make their items in small batches and everything from scratch—so say goodbye to basic cookies. SōDOUGH wants you to purge your soul, implying that it’s an extraordinary experience and makes desserts more of a treat, versus a mass-produced snack without the careful effort; SōDOUGH believes in doing it the right way the first time; they care about how they’re represented, the recipes they use, and menu selection.
The Foundation
When creating the concept, Managing Partner Lauren Poulos says SōDOUGH wanted to use a beautiful base that was simple in creation. Having the base recipe and methods to perfection is important to them. The brioche dough is made with flour, sugar, milk, butter, yeast, salt, and vanilla—making it the staple and foundation of their menu. Poulos says SōDOUGH gets local product from a dairy farm in Georgia; this farm doesn’t add hormones to their cows, and actually allows lactose individuals to still consume it. Another cool thing is they’re a peanut-free bakery, and stick to walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds. Being self-conscious about serious allergies is something they take pride in. Now on to the good stuff—the menu.
Doughnuts
I know, all you really need to know is that there are doughnuts. Made with brioche dough, the doughnuts are fried throughout the day. If you’re cool, which I’m sure you are, then you appreciate Proof Brewing Company’s Creatures in the Dark beer, and now you get to eat a doughnut that has Creatures in the Dark Glaze all over it—best doughnut ever invented. Some other amazing flavors are Strawberry Lavender and NY Cheesecake. They have a rotating menu, where you can try Delta Biscuit, Key Lime Coconut, Blueberry Cobbler, and Thai Coffee; I’ll take a dozen, thank you.
Cookies and Bars
For cookies, you can choose between their staple flavors: Confetti Crunch, Brown Butter Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Walnut, and Fruit & Oates. Or, you can just try all of them, no judgment here. For their rotating fall menu, they have Campfire Blondie, Coconut Macaroon, Chocolate Chip Marble Cheesecake, and Lemon bars. SōDOUGH is an exciting bakery because they’re constantly curating their menu to align with the times and seasons. Every day you go in, they’ll have new specials and flavors to bring to the table.
Galettes
Galettes are free-form tarts that are molded into a handheld pie. Try their fall flavors with a sweet and savory twist: Fig Mascarpone, Apple Gouda, and Strawberry Balsamic. You can also choose a Spinach and Artichoke, or a Mushroom and Swiss. By the way, SōDOUGH has Lucky Goat Coffee to give you that afternoon boost while you’re studying and snacking.
Kolache
Kolache is a Czechoslovakian sweet bread. On SōDOUGH’s menu, you can find an Everything Bagel Kolache with cream cheese, Pimento Cheese if you’re feeling the southern vibes, and a kolache made with Madison Social’s legendary BLT dip. If you haven’t had this appetizer yet, then, first of all, drop everything you’re doing and go to MadSo to try it. Then go back to SōDOUGH and eat a BLT Kolache because you deserve to treat yo self.
Strata
Similar to quiche, SōDOUGH makes their strata homemade with brioche dough. They have Spinach and Artichoke Strata, Spicy Cheddar, and bacon and cheese, and they keep it fresh and seasonal, so expect new things.
Extra Goodies
With the homemade ingredients, SōDOUGH constantly creates new menu items for daily specials. One day they may have handcrafted cinnamon rolls, Pastelitos made with guava and cream cheese, blueberry bread, cranberry bread, and more.
Tallahassee already has a great bakery selection, but SōDOUGH didn’t want to just fit in with the bakeries already there—they wanted to have a unique take on the culinary scene and bring a fresh perspective. Visiting SōDOUGH provides a brand new and exciting experience for Tally.
