BoruBoru Sushi+ is the newest hip restaurant coming to the Atlanta area, and luckily for us Emory students it is opening right in Emory Point, only a short walk away from campus. I was lucky enough to get a preview of the food at the soft opening of the restaurant and I have to say that it does not disappoint. From the creative sushi burritos to poke bowls filled with fresh fish, I am throughly impressed.
After getting in contact with the owners of the restaurant to write this article, I was invited to a private event to preview the food (for free!). I was also able to bring a friend with me to take pictures of the food. We were able to custom-order our main courses and they gave out many appetizers and side dishes to everyone as well.
Upon walking into the funky eatery you grab a menu where you can choose to customize a burrito or a bowl or even choose one of their delicious signature options. When you’re ready, you go right up to the front where you place your order and they tell you they will call your number when it is ready. We both ordered a burrito and we ordered a poke bowl to share. Also, we started off with some appetizers: edamame, seaweed salad, and lotus chips.
The edamame was nothing special, just normal edamame. But, the seaweed salad and lotus chips were exceptional. The salad was fresh and dressed lightly with a cooling ginger dressing. The lotus chips were surprisingly flavorful and wonderfully crunchy. Honestly, eating the lotus chips was one of my highlights from the night. Just as we finished out appetizers our food was ready.
During my test of this restaurant my friend and I both ordered spicy tuna burritos. I filled mine with cucumber, crispy onion, avocado, and spinach with extra spicy mayo. The burrito held together pretty well for being wrapped only in seaweed and rice. Also, the rice was super-fresh and obviously made in-house. The sushi-grade tuna was lightly seared— the outside was cooked but the inside was raw and super fresh. Before I came I thought that all of this sushi burrito talk might not be worth the hype, but it definitely is.
We also ordered the salmon poke bowl which was amazing. On top of the sushi rice was fresh avocado, salmon cubes, cucumbers, scallions, and crispy onions. I would 100% recommend this dish to anyone. After eating I did not feel like my meal was too heavy and I was just the right amount full. I mean, fish is healthy, right?
I was lucky enough to speak to one of the three co-owners, Michael Hu, who described the vision behind the creation of BoruBoru. His team aimed to answer the question “How do we offer something healthy, delicious [that] also can be personalized? We challenged ourselves to build an eating platform that [fits] everyone.” Starting Monday October 17th you can go to BoruBoru and try out all these mouth-watering dishes for yourself. It definitely is worth the hype.
