We’ve all had cravings, whether it’s for something sweet, savoury or spicy. If you’re constantly craving something Asian and are based around George Square, then look no further. Here are 5 Asian restaurants that will definitely solve where you should go for lunch!
1. Ting Thai Caravan
If you haven’t heard of Caravan you’ve either been living under a rock, or really need to get out more. Always full during peak times, you will usually find a queue outside the door at lunchtime. Under the same ownership as other cult favourites, most notably The Outsider and Checkpoint, the food is delicious and very reasonably priced.
Tips: Definitely try the Pad Thai or the Yam Moo Yang, but bring some gum for after and be prepared to smell like the kitchen for the rest of the day! Also cash only.
2. Lian Pu
Having recently undergone renovation, Lian Pu definitely feels more comfortable now. With an extensive menu serving mostly Chinese dishes this is the place to go if you want some Ma Po Tofu, Sweet and Sour Chicken, or basically anything you can think of. They even serve bubble tea! They also have a hot pot restaurant downstairs which is definitely worth giving a try.
Tips: It is cash only, so be sure to bring some!
3. Tasty Noodle
Tucked away in a small shop front on Buccleuch Street is Tasty Noodle. You will usually see the door open, or the windows completely fogged up from condensation and a bright sign flashing “Open”. As the name indicates, this is the place to get some pretty delicious noodles. I personally think it’s a good sign when a restaurant is filled with “locals” and whenever I visit, homesickness certainly plagues me from hearing all the Mandarin and Cantonese being spoken around me. Not a fine-dining establishment, but the food is fresh, authentic and worth every penny.
Tips: Try to come in off-peak hours to avoid the rush. There is an open kitchen, so like many others, be prepared to smell like your food for the afternoon…
4. Koyama
Found on Forrest Road, this Japanese restaurant has a huge selection of dishes, so many that I struggle to choose what to eat. Their sushi sets and bento boxes prices are very reasonable for what you get, and the sashimi is always very fresh. With all their utensils imported from Japan, Koyama tries to provide a more traditional experience and will absolutely satisfy your Japanese cravings whether they are for ramen, katsudon or just some salmon sashimi.
Tips: Make the most of the set meals to keep in your student budget!
5. Nan yang
Located in Quarter-mile, this Malaysian restaurant has all the traditional favourites. Whether it is Hainan chicken rice, Nasi Goreng, Char Kway Teow or Laksa, they have it. The food comes relatively quickly and is really yummy. The only downside is that it is more costly than the other restaurants.
Tips: Call and book ahead if you are going during busy periods.
With these 5 Asian restaurants so nearby, you’ve got no excuse for instant ramen and Tesco’s hoisin duck wraps anymore. Satisfying a craving has never been so good!
