5 Duke Rec Fitness Classes to Take Before You Graduate

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Duke chapter.

There’s no doubt that Duke has pretty amazing athletic teams (#ballislyfe). Thankfully, it also has great group fitness class for all of us NARPs (non-athletic regular people) who are looking to stay in shape in college or trying to burn off that entire pizza you ate at 2 am. All the group fitness classes are free so, there’s really no excuse. Check out the schedule here, and read on to find out about my five favorite classes.

1. Kickboxing

This is definitely my favorite fitness class at Duke. It’s cardio-based and designed to keep your heart rate up, so you never stop moving for the entire hour. You learn combinations of punches and kicks and then do TABATA (20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, 8 times) strength exercises in between punching combinations. This is a great total body workout that will make you feel empowered and tough AF.

2. Cycling

There’s a reason why there’s so much hype around indoor cycling studios like SoulCycle and Flywheel. But why pay $30 for one ride when you can do it right on campus for free? The classroom is lit by string lights along the ceiling, the music is bumping, and the instructors are energetic and motivating. Take this class and sweat like you’ve never sweat before. If you are a spin class virgin, check out this article to be fully prepared for your first ride.

3. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is known for being the most effective and efficient for fat loss. HIIT workouts involve short bursts at maximum effort, followed by longer periods of low effort exercises for recovery. HIIT workouts also help your body continue to burn more calories even after the class is over and boost your metabolism.

4. Pilates/Cardio Barre

Barre is a ballet-inspired workout that uses low-impact “pulse” movements focused on particular areas of the body like your arms, abs, legs, and glutes. Don’t get intimidated by the name, there is no ballet experience required. This class is open to anyone looking to tone and build some lean muscles.

5. Zumba

Bring a couple of friends and try out a Zumba class for a fun hour of dancing and sweating. Trust me, you don’t have to be a good dancer to have a blast and get a good workout. Some added benefits: Zumba is one of the best workouts for your abs and hey, maybe you’ll learn some new moves for Shooters.
