What to Know About St. Patty’s SaturDAGES

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Delaware chapter.

If there’s one thing that University of Delaware is known for and does right, it’s St. Patty’s Day. While other schools might be out on a Saturday afternoon drinking at a party, we’re defining the word SaturDAGE because every greek fraternity house on campus celebrates with a day-long party full of booze. Whether you’re experiencing your first or last St. Patty’s day at UD, here’s a guide of the most important facts about the most green and gregarious Saturday of the whole semester.

1. The Need to Fuel-Up

If you choose to dage for St. Patty’s there is a good chance you may be out from 11 AM to 5 or 6 PM in the afternoon. Make sure you eat breakfast and fuel-up on snacks throughout the day. If you an stand the line at NDB, a festive green bagel will do the trick. . It is easy to jump from party to party and forget food when all that’s offered at the parties are Natty Light.

2. Dress the Part

The day of the Irish comes once a year, so you best be dressed for the occasion. Dig out your old “Kiss Me I’m Irish” shirts and make sure to run to Five and Dime to buy a shamrock headband or green face paint. You’ll be green with envy if you’re not prepared.

3. Avoid Main Street At All Costs

Main Street will be absolutely packed on the 18th with all of the party-goers and drunk college kids. Don’t bother waiting in the line for El Diablo or Roots and instead host a pizza night at your apartment. Or, better yet, try some DIY green eggs and ham to get in the festive mood.

4. Don’t Feel Pressured to Go Out

As a neuroscience pre-med major, I am the first person to insist that going out at night and daging during the day should be  time spent elsewhere. Study if you need to, and Saturdage if you desire.  Do what you want to, and do not feel pressured to do otherwise.

5. Be Knowledgeable About Other Activities On Campus

Last year on St. Patty’s-dage, Perkins was the place to be, giving out  free pizza, cookies, wings, a trail-mix bar, UDairy ice-cream, and giveaways. If you still want to party but don’t want to make a huge dent in your wallet, do not miss this free food opportunity, even if you are heading back to your dorm or apartment after a day out.
