This Cauliflower Steak Recipe Will Make You Forget About Red Meat

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Clarion chapter.

Cauliflower is one of the most versatile vegetables on earth. Whether you rice it, make wings out of it, or just cut it up to dip in hummus, cauliflower is a wonderful, hearty and nutritious way to increase your veggie intake.

But why cauliflower? Why not another vegetable? While we know that all veggies have their place, cauliflower is special because it’s a blank canvas. How many times have you used rice in your dish because you can add the flavor you want to it? How many times have you chosen chicken because you can determine what it tastes like? Cauliflower is the rice/chicken of vegetables. Sort of bland, yet delicious and good for you!

Today, we’re steakin’ it. Yup. We’re gonna roast it good. Steak is a pretty standard date night dinner. For special occasions? Steak is great. But what about those vegetarians out there? Or those on a diet? This cauliflower steak recipe is an amazing option for those looking to up the veggies in their favorite meals.

Instructions

  1. Kaitlyn Mulligan

Preheat oven to 400ºF. Wash off your head of cauliflower and cut it into u0022steak-likeu0022 pieces.

#SpoonTip: Cauliflower is very crumbly and the pieces fall apart easily. Cut from the middle and chop the pieces down from the halves. Then, you’ll have two u0022steaksu0022 and lots of little florets.

  2. Kaitlyn Mulligan

On a sheet pan, lay out the two cauliflower steaks. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle on garlic. Make sure to get both sides.

#SpoonTip: You want the cauliflower to cook in the olive oil, so make sure you use enough of it.

  3. Kaitlyn Mulligan

Season your cauliflower with whatever you want. I used steak seasoning, salt, and pepper. This gives it a bit of a smoky taste without the grill, even though it isn’t meat.

  4. Kaitlyn Mulligan

Pop your u0022steaksu0022 in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until they are lightly browned. You want the cauliflower to be tender.

Serve your u0022steaku0022 up with your favorite side dish. And finally, enjoy your healthy, veggie steak!

The beautiful part about this cauliflower steak recipe is that you can choose the flavors. If you don’t like steak seasoning, choose other spices. You can sprinkle on paprika or oregano, cumin or chili flakes. Marinate it by soaking the steak in Greek or Italian dressing.

Like I said, cauliflower is a blank canvas. Decide what flavors you want your steak to take on and make it your own. Be creative! After all, cauliflower “steak” is not the typical dinner. And you are not the typical college chef.
