Healthy Tuna Treats Your Cat Will Go Crazy For

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Chapel Hill chapter.

College can get lonely sometimes, which is why it’s no surprise that many bring their furry friend with them when they move into their first apartment—pet fees be damned. And as a thank you for saving us from social isolation, I argue that our pets deserve a couple of treats every once in a while. But it can be difficult when the majority of store-bought treats have too much grain and very little protein, a not-so-healthy combination for your best pal.

To make sure my cats are getting something healthier, I started making their treats myself. Not only do I know what’s going into their food, but it’s way less expensive than buying store-bought treats. Be sure to use these just as treats though, as they don’t have the nutritional value that your cat’s food provides.

Set out ingredients and preheat oven to 350° F.

#SpoonTip: Make sure you hide the catnip so your cats can’t get into it before you make these awesome treats. I learned this the hard way.

Using a food processor or hand mixer, combine all ingredients until a dough forms. If you don’t have a hand mixer, make sure tuna is chopped finely before combining with a spatula. The dough should be a little sticky, but not so much that it is unmanageable. Add flour a tablespoon at a time if the dough seems too sticky.

Roll into balls of equal size and flatten slightly with your finger. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 10 minutes, or until treats are slightly browned. Serve some to your kitty right away and store the rest in an airtight container.
