5-Ingredient Vegan “Shamrock Shake:” No Spinach Required

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Cal Poly chapter.

The Shamrock Shake, a St. Patrick’s Day fast-food concoction, is sold every March to mint and milkshake lovers’ delight. Unfortunately, what’s not as delightful as the flavor is the nutrition. Over 20 ingredients are used in the 2018 version of the drink, including high fructose corn syrup. This year, trade in those 20 plus ingredients for just five with a healthy, vegan Shamrock Shake spinoff.

The healthy “superfood” featured in this shake is Spirulina, a blue-green algae. Spirulina is protein-dense and vitamin-loaded, yet has a flavor so faint it can’t be detected in smoothies. Find it at health food stores, Whole Foods or any other new age hot spot you think would sell algae.
