The 9 Best Places to Brunch in SLO

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Cal Poly chapter.

Let’s be real, brunching is one of the better activities in this world. There’s just something about waking up, sitting in bed for a few more hours, and being able to eat breakfast food at almost any time and still have it be socially acceptable. Luckily in SLO, we’ve been #blessed with some of the greatest brunch places of all time. Check out these Mustang favorites and be sure to hit them all up before you graduate.

1. Sally Loo’s Wholesome Cafe

With everything from fluffy Belgian waffles to acai bowls and quiche, Sally Loo’s is a classic SLO favorite for brunch (as evident by the massive crowds on Sundays and endless Instagram posts). My personal favorite orders include the scrambled-egg-stuffed croissant (the rosemary & bacon combo), and the ciabatta egg sandwich. Be sure to order the hot apple cider to go along with your meal, too.

2. Louisa’s Place

Louisa’s is your go-to if you’re looking for a traditional diner-style brunch. Everything on the menu is good, especially the huevos rancheros and the massive biscuits that come as sides with some of the breakfasts. It’s not just the biscuits that are huge, either—prepare yourself to leave with leftovers (or the feeling that you’re going to burst).

3. Novo Restaurant & Lounge

Typically thought of as an upscale dinner eatery, Novo also boasts a delicious Sunday brunch menu, with items like their brioche french toast and eggs or salmon Benedict. With creekside patio seating and a low-key yet high-class ambience, Novo is the perfect excuse to dress up for your brunch. And for those of you who can’t get enough of their avocado-shrimp spring rolls (like me), don’t worry—they’re still on the menu.

4. Breakfast Buzz

Known for their breakfast burritos, Breakfast Buzz also offers some other classic brunch entrees, like french toast and eggs. #SpoonTip: Download the app Pocket Points to score some breakfast burrito rewards, because everything tastes better when it’s free.

5. Linnaea’s Cafe

Channel your ultimate foodie aesthetic at Linnaea’s as you sip on some organic, fair trade coffee, relax by the koi pond in the back garden and dig into your brunch. For the veggie fans, Linnaea’s breakfast menu is completely vegetarian, with many vegan options as well. #SpoonTip: Make sure you try the carrot cake—and call ahead to make sure it’s not sold out already.

6. Big Sky Cafe

Serving breakfast until 1, Big Sky is more than just a great dinner place to make your parents take you when they’re in town. With dishes like their chicken sausage scramble, chile verde omelette, Mediterranean scramble and black bean huevos rancheros, Big Sky is the perfect brunch spot for egg lovers—plus, all the eggs used are fresh from Cal Poly. Save room for the other delicious dishes and sides, too, like the buttermilk-ginger coffee cake or cornbread.

7. Bon Temps Creole Cafe

Looking to switch up your brunch game? Try this Southern-style Cajun cuisine to start your day with a kick. Highlights include the Ash Wednesday Omlette (filled with artichoke hearts) and the Cajun Pain Perdu (french toast).

8. Charlie’s Place

An American-Mexican fusion restaurant, Charlie’s does everything from chorizo omelettes to tri-tip breakfast burritos. Plus, for all you legal Mustangs & Slocals, stop by on Sundays from 10-2 for bottomless mimosas to accompany your brunch.

9. Kreuzberg Coffee Company

Just when you thought breakfast (that happens to be served all day) couldn’t get any better, Kreuzberg went ahead and put tater tots in their breakfast burritos and decided to serve them as sides. Bring your homework, settle down and enjoy some funky art and a cup of coffee as you chow down at this SLO student favorite.

Happy brunching!
