Breakfast in Boston

Boston is known for a lot of things–it’s sports, lobster, questionable drivers, and so much more–but I don’t think it gets enough credit for its incredible breakfast scene. And like many of you, we don’t always have time to sit and enjoy the city’s ambiance, so I rounded up some of the city’s best grab and go breakfast spots.

Sunny Girl – Breakfast Sandwich

Starting off strong, I have to suggest my personal favorite: Sunny Girl. Sunny Girl is the dream breakfast spot for any egg sandwich lover, located waterfront in Boston’s historic North End. Parking may not be easy to come by in these parts, but don’t let that deter you. Sunny Girl offers a variety of sandwiches and toasts, but specializes in breakfast sandwiches made on their homemade English muffins. They’re cooked fresh, in-house daily and are undoubtedly the best English muffins I’ve had in Boston, if not the best anywhere. Their most known sandwich is the mouthwatering Sunny Girl – a Nellie’s fried egg with north country smokehouse bacon, cheddar, smashed avocado, and sunny sauce on their English muffins. If you get the chance to go by, I’d also recommend their underrated gem, the Artie Party – an over-easy egg with crispy mortadella, pistachio mascarpone, and wild cherry morstada on their English muffin. The mortadella here is the real standout, and the innovative addition of creamy nuttiness and the tartness of the cherry morstada solidifies this sandwich as my personal favorite breakfast in all of Boston. Insider tip: don’t leave without grabbing a delicious iced coffee sourced by Speedwell from Plymouth, MA!

PopUp Bagels

If breakfast sandwiches aren’t really your thing and you’d rather the best bagel in town, I suggest you check out PopUp Bagel’s new location in Seaport. We’d never want to admit that New York does something better than Boston, but these NY style bagels might be the exception. Despite originating in Connecticut, this company recently acquired a cult-like following in New York City – going viral nearly every week for their experimental, weekly changing “schmear” (cream cheese) and their variety of classic homemade bagels. The Spoon team here at BU was lucky enough to partner with them and try their most recent cream cheese: the roasted red pepper schmear. This cream cheese slathered on their soft and chewy everything bagel blew my mind – a perfectly creative combo of gentle heat and sweetness. Needless to say, we will be returning as soon as possible. If the long lines in the Seaport location are holding you back, don’t be discouraged–their second Boston area location will open later this summer!

Curio Waffles

I’ll admit that I’m usually a savory breakfast kind of girl, but every now and then I need to switch it up. And when I do, you can bet that I’m heading across the river from BU’s campus to Curio Waffles. So no, technically this spot is not in Boston, but Cambridge is close enough. Like PopUp Bagels, Curio switches their menu up pretty often. Alongside their outstanding coffee (sourced from Broadstreet Coffee Roasters in Cambridge, MA), Curio is known for its artisan, experimental waffles. Their monthly specials are always the showstopper; my personal favorites include the thanksgiving-style Stuffing Waffle, the Gingerbread Waffle, and last month’s Cannoli Waffle. Curio is sure to change your perspective on the possibility of this classic breakfast dish. But if you’re not feeling up for that kind of adventure, they also usually have their classic Liege Waffle and Chocolate Tahini Waffle on hand. For more information on them, check out my previous article about the best waffles in Cambridge.

On Finding Your Best Breakfast

Boston is full of endless opportunities, especially when it comes to breakfast. The best ones might be those that you take the time to share with your friends and family, on slow sunny mornings. But in a pinch, it’s good to know that Boston still has you covered. I hope this rundown has shown you that there’s a little something for everyone here, in all corners of the city. Now I’d urge you to seize the opportunity to find YOUR go-to breakfast spot.

Hi! My name is Bianca Rexine, and I am a Sophomore studying English at Boston University. I'm originally from Arlington, Massachusetts but mostly grew up on the central coast of California. I love trying new foods and restaurants, but especially love trying cafes and coffee shops. I spent about two years working in a local coffee shop in California, and consider myself a bit of a coffee snob.
