Your Go-To Guide to Dining in Newton Centre

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at BC chapter.

Ahh, Newton Centre. A place unknown to students other than the few brave souls on Newton Campus who have taken the “trek” (all 15 minutes of the walk) in search of reasonably priced candy at CVS. Others may know Newton Centre by its association to breakfast hotspot Johnny’s Luncheonette. There is much more to Newton Centre than this, though. Newton Centre is packed with anything you could ever need, but most of us have no idea it is all there. Here is a list of all the dining options to try next time you are in Newton Centre.

The Crowd Favorites

1. Johnny’s Luncheonette

Johnny’s Luncheonette is what most people think of when they think of Newton Centre. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and serving breakfast all day long), Johnny’s is perfect for any time of the day. All of their food is fantastic, and with reasonable prices you really can’t go wrong (whether it’s pancakes, french toast, a milkshake, a burger or even a salad).

2. Starbucks AND Dunkin’ Donuts

Does your friend group frequently debate whether Starbucks or Dunks coffee is better? Well now you don’t have to choose! Newton Centre offers both to please all the caffeine lovers in your group. While neither of these are technically “dining” places, they both have places to sit and do work, perfect for when O’Neill and Bapst start to become a little too crowded during midterms and finals szn.

3. Panera

With a casual atmosphere, free WiFi, and delicious food, Panera is another awesome place to sit with friends and get your homework done. Indulge in some warm soup, or a fresh salad (or maybe a little of both) that will fuel you up for the long day of studying. They even have a food loyalty program you can sign up for to help you out on your college budget.

The Places You Didn’t Know You Already Love

1. Peet’s Coffee

Recognize those coffee cups? That’s right, you can satisfy your Chocolate Bar cravings without the line practically out the door of Stokes at the Peet’s Coffee in Newton Centre. Open from 6AM to 8PM almost every day of the week, get your exercise for the day with your walk to Newton, grab your coffee and get some work done in the peace and quiet away from BC.

2. J.P. Lick’s

J.P. Licks is an ice cream chain found only in Boston. J.P. Licks was started in Jamaica Plain (hence the J.P.) and serves homemade ice cream. If their delicious ice cream isn’t enough, they also have a wide selection of coffee, hot chocolate, and tea to help wash it all down. If Newton Centre is just too far away, you can also find J.P. Licks on food delivery services such as GrubHub and DoorDash.

Awesome Places You Had No Idea Existed

1. Deluxe Station Diner

Did you know there is another diner in Newton Centre? Johnny’s… step aside for now. Located inside of the Newton Centre T station, Deluxe Station Diner is an quaint and adorable place to have a great breakfast or lunch. After you finish your meal, hop right on the green line for a quick trip to explore the many neighborhoods of Boston.

2. Bill’s Pizzeria

Bill’s Pizzeria offers a wide variety of homemade pizzas, and they have gluten free pizzas, too. The restaurant itself has a fun and rustic vibe to it that feels inviting the second you walk in the door. If that isn’t enticing enough, they were also featured in the Boston Globe and the Phantom Gourmet… so now you have to stop by and have at least one bite. To make it even more convenient, you can order online for delivery or pickup.

3. Sweet Tomatoes Pizza

Sweet Tomatoes Pizza was founded right here in Newton Centre! Sweet Tomatoes is unlike other pizzas because of their signature chopped tomatoes chunks that they put in their pizza sauce. They have tons of different specialty pizza options to choose from, or you can create your own. You can find them open seven days a week from 11:30AM-9PM!

The Places to Go When You’re Feeling Adventurous

1. Little Big Diner

Little Big Diner is known for their rice bowls and noodles. This is perfect for when you could use some quality ramen, and not that $2 stuff college students are infamously associated with. Little Big Diner is not just any ramen though, it’s cool ramen. Get fresh vegetables, meat, and even eggs added into your ramen and take it to the next level.

2. Four Spoons Restaurant

Four Spoons is known for their Thai-inspired food that is both delicious and sophisticated. They have everything from salads, to soup, to bok choy, and pad Thai. There is even a vegetarian portion of the menu filled with different tofu and vegetable options. Like other Newton Centre favorites, they also offer take out and delivery with services like DoorDash and UberEats.

So the next time you and your friends are trying to figure out where to go out to eat, don’t forget about Newton Centre. There are an endless amount of options that will please each and every member of the group. Even if you decide that you don’t want to leave your warm and cozy dorm room, many of these places will also deliver the food right to your doorstep. Newton Centre is a whole new world of dining just waiting to be explored!
