How to Make an Edible Nativity Scene

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at App State chapter.

When December rolls around each year, most people can’t seem to get two things off their mind: Christmas and the food that partners with the holiday season. The saying “Jesus is the reason for the season” takes another meaning when Jesus takes the form of a tasty treat. What better than to combine the two and create an edible nativity scene? In just 11 simple steps, you can construct your own heavenly delight with a typical gingerbread house kit.

Instructions

  1. Rachel Greenland

Purchase a traditional gingerbread house kit.

  2. Rachel Greenland

Construct the base of the barn using the sides and back half of what would normally be the house. Some kits supply an “E-Z Build Tray.”

  3. Rachel Greenland

Once it dries, lay one of the gingerbread pieces for the roof across your barn.

  4. Rachel Greenland

In the shape of a star, place 5 small dots and one more in the center of the star with the icing on the upper part of the back side of the barn and put a small, round, yellow candy on each icing dot.

  5. For Mary, use one of the gingerbread men and coat the icing where clothes would lie. Then, place peppermints and other large, round, red candies on top of the icing. Add a line of icing across the gingerbread man’s face for a smile and place 2 small, round, blue candies on the eyes.

  6. For Joseph, use the other gingerbread man and coat the icing in the same fashion. Then, with a different color of large, round candies, place the candies on top of the icing for clothes. Add a line of icing across the gingerbread man’s face for a smile and place 2 small, round, blue candies on the eyes.

  7. Rachel Greenland

For baby Jesus, you may have to use the back of the tree if your kit does not come with a third gingerbread man. Ice his body in a similar way and use another color of large, round candies to decorate his body. Add a line of icing across the gingerbread man’s face for a smile and place 2 small, round, blue candies on the eyes.

  8. Put your 3 gingerbread men in front of the barn.

  9. Rachel Greenland

You may also utilize the gumdrops to represent the gold, frakincense, and myrrh.

  10. Rachel Greenland

Also, you can use the chimney as a sheep. Cover the chimney in icing and place white, large, round candies on the body. Add a small, round, green candy for an eye.

Display your nativity scene or eat it!
