Current location: “Fatty Lane,” New Zealand. This semester I traveled across the world to study abroad in New Zealand and ended up living on a street lined with Pizza Hut, KFC, Dominos, and McDonalds. Instead of falling victim to these (beloved) American fast food institutions, I decided to embark on a scientific journey to discover the ultimate drunk eats. In the name of research, my flat mates and I decided to go out, get drunk and make some good eats.
Disclaimer: no flat mates were harmed in the making of this article.
Nachos
To start off our list, we made a classic — nachos. They are cheesy, crunchy, salty, and just plain delicious. Nachos make the cut for ultimate drunk eats since you can essentially satisfy every craving you have with one dish. You can also get your daily serving of fruits and veggies by adding some salsa and avocado (maybe a stretch, but it works for me). You can add a delicious twist to this plate by adding some jalapeño peppers and some leftover meat like chicken or beef.
#Spoon Tip: To make sure all of the chips are cheesy, layer the chips and cheese. So put down a layer of chips, add tons of cheese, then add another layer of chips, and a final layer of cheese.
Eggs
Breakfast, lunch, dinner, drunk eats. The options are endless for what you can do with eggs. According to our “research,” a fab option is to make scrambled eggs with cheese and avocado. For the ultimate drunk eats though, cook up some bacon in the microwave and add it to your dish; because bacon is life.
Popcorn
Easy, breezy, beautiful ~ popcorn. It’s light and crunchy and even better, it’s guilt free. Popcorn is one of the easiest drunk eats to make and can be spiced up to satisfy your cravings. Want something on the sweeter side? Try some cinna-sugar popcorn. If you’re looking for something a little more savory, then try this garlic and herb popcorn recipe.
Porridge
Get rid of all of your negative preconceived notions about porridge, because porridge is an ultimate drunk eat for many reasons. (1) It’s wicked hard to mess up porridge. (2) You can be creative as you want. (3) Porridge is actually good. Add sliced banana and peanut butter to your porridge before you microwave it for some dope flavors. You can also add apples, cinnamon, and/or raisins. When making porridge, the world is your oyster so try anything and everything.
Peanut Butter & Jelly
Oh baby, this sandwich is freakin’ FANTASTIC. Turn this lunchbox classic into the ultimate drunk eat by buttering the bread, putting it on the skillet and grilling it like a grilled cheese. I promise that grilling your pb&j is high key a game changer (quick shoutout to my flatmates who have heard me say this every single time that I make a grilled pb&j). It’s the perfect balance of crunchy and gooey and honestly, you should just stop reading this article now and go make one. You’re welcome.
#SpoonTip: add some sliced banana to the middle of your sandwich before you grill it.
I hope this list inspires you to be a master chef and try out some new things in the kitchen. Put on some throwback tunes, dance it out with your friends, and test out some of these recipes. Honestly, anything that you make after a night out will be pretty dank and if all else fails, then you can never go wrong with ordering delivery.
