How to Make Cream Cheese Frosting

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Northwestern chapter.

Many people settle for store-bought frosting, but I find the pre-made stuff too sweet. I like my cream cheese frosting to taste like real cream cheese instead of over-processed sugar. I played around with some classic cream cheese frosting recipes and found that delicious, homemade frosting is not at all hard to make. You can make tasty cream cheese frosting under 20 minutes with just four simple ingredients. Sorry Betty Crocker.

Easy

Prep Time: 10 min
Total Time: 10 min

Servings: 3 cups (ices 8″ springform cake pan)

Ingredients:
12 ounces of cream cheese, softened (one and a half box)
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 cups sifted powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (can be replaced with hazelnut or almond extract)

Directions:
1. In a large bowl, add softened cream cheese and butter and mix with an electric mixer for 1 minute.
2. Add the vanilla extract and mix for 10 seconds.
3. Add powdered sugar little by little and mix until desired consistency. Get rid of any lumps until the mixture is smooth.
4. Refrigerate frosting until it is ready to use.

TIP: For chocolate cream cheese frosting, replace 1 cup of powdered sugar with cocoa powder.
