How to Make an Old-Fashioned No-Frills Whiskey Cocktail in Less Than a Minute

In the good ol’ days of 1832, if real men weren’t out fighting bears with their hands, they were drinking whiskey. Some proto-hipster gentleman ordered his a little differently, and we should be grateful. It became a thing. Since it was the only whiskey cocktail at the time, people were super original and named it the “Whiskey Cocktail.”

Modern recipes add several extra ingredients. There are a lot of poser “Old-Fashioned” Whiskey Cocktails out there, which take several minutes to make. And a trip to the market just for fancy garnish. Here’s how to make a true Whiskey Cocktail, without all the frills. It should take just less than a minute.

I recommend using Jameson Irish whiskey. Also use Angostura bitters – they can come in handy for other Spoon drink recipes, and were around back then. Now let’s start mixin’.

Step 1

Mix your sugar, water, and bitters together in an old fashioned/rocks/whiskey glass.

#SpoonTip: The first dashes of Angostura bitters tend to hit the upper sides of a vertical glass – angle it so they hit the bottom.

Step 2

Add ice on top of the mixture.
