Until a couple of weeks ago, I had never heard about pigs in a blanket. I honestly regret that I did not discover this amazing snack so much earlier. Sausages wrapped in flaky, yummy crescent rolls? Where do I sign up to have an unlimited number of these bites?
I am an international student, and somehow I was never introduced to these flavorful yummies until recently when it came up during our chapter meeting for Spoon here at Virginia Tech. Then I found out that April 24th was Pigs In A Blanket Day: a whole day where I could stuff my face with these mini rolls without people judging.
Pigs in a blanket started off as a portable lunch for field workers. Let’s just take a moment to appreciate the research and exploration these field workers have done…especially in the area of wrapping cocktail sausages in small pieces of bread.
In honor of the recently passed Pigs In A Blanket Day, let us be clear about one thing: These are NOT sausage rolls. Sausage rolls are clunky and take up too much space. Pigs in a blanket on the other hand are pieces of heaven you can fit whole into your mouth. Here are seven pigs in a blanket recipes that you can try while I eat my already made ones.
The Basic Pigs In A Blanket
Replace the cocktail wieners with halved breakfast sausages and you have an amazing on-the-go breakfast. Get the recipe here.
Mason Jar Pigs In A Blanket Pancakes with Maple Fried Apples
This is for all you Pinterest-y types out there. Mason jars can be used for more than just cutesy crafts made by sorority girls. They’re also awesome for making this pigs in a blanket and pancake combination. Here is the recipe.
Cheddar & Caramelized Onion Pigs In A Blanket
Say cheese! Adding cheese to food makes it twice as delicious. The caramelized onions are an optional addition to these pigs in a blanket but the cheese is absolutely mandatory unless you hate all things good in the world. Recipe here.
Pizza Pigs In A Blanket
Pizza sausage bites should always be a thing. Dipping this in the marinara sauce gives these pigs an Italian twist. Here’s the recipe.
Chorizo Pigs with Cilantro Dip
The chorizo combined with the cilantro dip make this recipe one of my favorites because I love cilantro. Also, dip makes pigs in a blanket taste ten times better. Get the recipe here.
Reuben Pigs In A Blanket
A mini version of the Reuben sandwich, except made with beef cocktail sausages instead of corned beef of course. Plus it has the added bonus of being a pig in a blanket, and not a stupid sandwich. These pigs fill the shoes of the Reuben well enough to merit the name. Here’s the recipe.
Spiced Pigs with Yogurt Dip
This chilled dip is made more delicious with some amazing spices. The cool dip make this recipe suitable for these warm spring days. Get the recipe here.
