It’s not surprising if you’ve never heard of an egg cream soda. I only know about it because my grandpa used to make them for me every time he visited, and he’s from Manhattan.
The drink dates back to the late 1800s on the streets of New York. It is said that a candy shop owner, Louis Auster, created the egg cream by accident and then sold the concoction by the thousands, but refused to give anyone the recipe. However, others believe the drink started because of a mistranslated drink order by an old “Yiddish theater pioneer.”
Despite its unconfirmed creator, the chocolate egg cream soda is unique to New York. According to Grub Street, Juliana’s Pizza is the best place to get an authentic egg cream soda. No need to head to New York, though — with this recipe, you can create your own chocolate egg cream soda!
