The Easiest Way to Make Your Own Iced Coffee

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Oregon chapter.

Although the weather has been a tad passive aggressive in Eugene these past couple weeks, the few hot days we’ve had thus far have been just that: HOT. And nothing satisfies a caffeine craving on a blistering hot day, which for us here in Oregon starts at 75 degrees, like a nice, big glass of iced coffee. What isn’t satisfying, however, is having to leave your house, wait in line and have to drop some rent money in order to quench your thirst. So when you wake up this weekend with a serious want, no, need for an iced beverage, test out this super simple and convenient method to make your own iced coffee in bulk! I’ll accept a glass in lieu of a thank you, if that works better for you. Let me know.

All you need is a coffee machine, ground coffee (thanks for the Starbucks, Grandma), a large pitcher or cup depending on how much you want to make at a time and a little bit of patience.

First, simply brew coffee as you normally would. If you don’t own a coffee machine, how are you alive right now? (But, seriously, how?) Also, read this to learn how to cold brew your joe.

Next, pour the coffee into the pitcher, cup or whatever container you have around and let it sit at room temperature for a two to three hours. Here’s where that patience part kicks in.

After letting it sit out for a bit, put the coffee into the refrigerator and allow it to chill for at least two more hours or, preferably, overnight. You’ll be able to add “patient” to your résumé after this one, so you’re welcome for that also.

Finally, pull that beauty out of the fridge and bask in its aroma for, like, 30 seconds because I know you’re probably half-dead by now due to lack of caffeine. Pour over ice and add any sweetener, creamer or milk that you like.

Tip: Mix your sweetener beforehand and let it chill alongside your coffee. I combined milk with a little sugar and cinnamon in a small cup and put it in the fridge for a few hours before my coffee was ready.

It may have been the best decision I have ever made.

Enjoy!
