What Does French Fries Mean On ‘Love Island USA?’

As of Monday morning, “French fries love island” has skyrocketed to the top of the most searched phrases in the country. Love Island USA’s season 8 cast just introduced a food metaphor that has the internet in shambles, and once you hear the explanation, you won’t be able to look at a side dish the same way again.

Here’s what went down in the villa

On Sunday’s episode, Kenzie Annis and Corbin Mims got a little too cozy under the covers. The morning after, Trinity Tatum walked into the women’s quarters with a very interesting question: “Which one of yous was doing French fries?” According to her and Bryce Alakai, who heard from across the room, it sounded way too wet to just be kissing. In a confessional, Kenzie confirmed she was “definitely getting some French fries” and that the two of them got a bit carried away. Trinity also admitted to trying “one little French fry” with Bryce, just because they were curious.

What “French fries” actually means

The simplest way to understand it is, French fries are a finger food. Just think about that for a bit. The cast landed on “French fries” as their code word for manual stimulation. That way it’s vague enough for TV while being just obvious enough to flood the internet by morning. It’s a side dish, not the full meal, but definitely still the same restaurant.

While the cheeky term spread like wildfire, people online were split between those who figured it out immediately and those who were absolutely lost. Honestly, this is one of those things that makes complete sense the second someone explains it, but literally no sense before that. So it’s understandable why reactions were so split.

This is actually a Love Island tradition

For those who aren’t longtime watchers of Love Island, this coded language thing might seem pretty strange. But this has actually been part of Love Island for years. With the show airing daily and cameras rolling constantly, the cast has to develop code words to talk about what happens at night without everything getting edited out. Morning scenes stay entertaining while keeping everything vague.

In season 7 of Love Island USA, cast members used the word “journey” as their placeholder for spicy activity. Back in season 6 of Love Island UK, some of the cast used tomato, avocado, and toast when discussing levels of intimacy. Seems like food keeps coming back as the go-to category, probably because it allows for a ton of flexibility. Whether it be a bite, a snack, an appetizer, or a full meal, there are an endless amount of ways to twist the food language, and apparently the casts always figure that out naturally every season.

Season 8 just happened to land on something especially Google-able.
