Frozen Sour Grapes Are the Easiest Summer Snack You’ll Make All Season

Frozen sour grapes are one of those snack hacks you can tell is about to blow up. Only a handful of videos are out right now, but the biggest one dropped yesterday and it is already racking up views fast. Creator @ashleymarkletreats posted the version that really kicked things off, with a staggering 112,000 likes and 11,700 saves in just one day. Comments are already full of people saying they’re starting their second batch. Creator @askinem’s version is sitting at 21,700 likes and is not slowing down anytime soon.

Green grapes, lime juice, Jell-O powder, and a freezer. That’s literally all it is, and yet it tastes like something you’d pay for. The lime juice coats each grape so the Jell-O powder sticks and then the freezer does the rest of the work. Four hours later and you’ve got a bowl of treats you’ll wish you’d made sooner.

It’s giving sour patch but make it fruit

If texture is a concern you have, don’t worry. They actually work really well. Once the grapes freeze, they stay firm and get a heavenly deep icy crunch that, combined with the Jell-O coating, makes it almost more like candy than fruit. Every bite slaps with that sour and sweet flavor all the way through, so it’s understandable why people in the comments are preferring this over actual candy.

What you need

To make them, grab green seedless grapes, the juice from one lime, berry blue and strawberry flavored Jell-O powder mix. Be sure to wash and fully dry your grapes so they hold the coating the way they need to. Once dried, toss them in a large bowl with the lime juice until they’re evenly coated, then roll each grape through the Jell-O powder, alternating between the two flavors as you go. Some people have found it’s faster to toss the grapes around in a bowl of each powder, it’s also much easier. Next just line them on a tray with parchment paper so they’re not touching and get them in the freezer for at least four hours. Waiting overnight gets you the best crunch though, so if you can plan ahead, do it.

The color also plays a major role in why this is spreading fast. Swapping between the berry blue and strawberry Jell-O gives each grape a bright, candy-shop look that makes the bowl hard not to share.

Make it your own

What’s really keeping this alive, is how easy it is to play around with. The top comments are already surging with ideas like using Kool-Aid powder, Tajín for a spicy-sour version, and Fun Dip for a more nostalgic taste. Someone even thought about swapping the grapes for blueberries, which unsurprisingly sounds fantastic.

Summer snack trends come and go, but the ones that stick around are always the ones that are ridiculously easy to make and somehow taste like a dream. For sure, this is one of those. If you happen to have grapes on standby in your fridge right now, then there’s really no excuse to not try these tonight.
