Why Is Stanley Recalling 2.6M Mugs?

Stanley has been pumping out products left and right. The new Target collection just came out, and earlier this season, a new holiday tumbler came out. The Wicked collection also came out this year, as well as a leak proof tumbler. People everywhere use Stanleys. Whether it’s for keeping water cold or coffee hot, Stanley is typically people’s go-to for a reusable bottle, cup, or mug to hold their beverage. It makes the perfect holiday gift for a friend or family member, and it comes in endless colors and designs. Stanley has been on top of its game this year.

But now, Stanley is recalling products instead of putting them out. Officials said today that over two million of the brand’s popular mugs are being recalled because of an issue with the lids, causing several people to burn themselves. Here’s what you need to know about the Stanley mug recall and what to do if you have purchased a recalled mug.

What Stanley cups are being recalled?

The cups being recalled are the Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs. The brand is recalling those sold  in the United States between June 2016 through this month. The recall includes all sizes of the mugs, which comes in a size of 12, 16, and 20 ounces.

The cups were sold online on Amazon, as well as at Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target. They retailed between $20 and $50. A total of 2.6 million of the cups are being recalled.

Why are they being recalled?

The cups are being recalled because of an issue with the looseness of their lids, causing burn injuries. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the mugs’ lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat. This can cause the mug’s lid to detach when being used, which in turn, can spill hot liquid all over the consumer.

Stanley has received 91 reports of issues with the mugs, and there have been 38 burn injuries as a result. This isn’t the first time Stanley products have been under fire: earlier this year, the company faced multiple lawsuits alleging that the brand didn’t disclose that its mugs are manufactured using some lead. Stanley responded by saying that the lead is inaccessible to consumers because they’re covered by a stainless-steel layer.

What do I do if I have one of the recalled mugs?

If you own and use one of the recalled mugs, stop using it immediately. You can contact Stanley for a free replacement lid if you want to continue using your mug. You can check to see if your mug was one of the recalled mugs by entering its information on the Stanley website
