Alright, so if you’ve been at West Chester University for over a year you know what tomorrow is: BANANA DAY. And if you’re a freshman, or transfer, get ready for one of the best days on campus all year.

Banana Day originated in 1996 (possibly before some of ya’ll were born) and the idea came from a student named Rodolfo P. Tellez. As a result, that year 3,000 bananas were given to people on campus and over 50 hours of service contributed to the community.

The tradition of Banana Day would continue for a couple years following and get bigger and better than the year before it.

Officially, Banana Day is every third Wednesday of April and is meant to boost moral and school pride for everyone. There are tons of reasons to be excited for the best day of the year at WC and here are a few:

1. FREE BANANAS

Okay, free and bananas? Don’t eat breakfast the day of the big event because there are more than enough bananas to go around FOR FREE. This sweet treat is delicious and healthy. You should totally grab as many as possible to try out some of these quick, easy, and tasty banana recipes.

2. Banana Trivia

Here’s a huge SpoonTip: brush up on your banana trivia. Every year there’s a part of Banana Day contributed to banana trivia specifically. Do you know how many varieties of bananas there are?

3. Banana Games

One of the best things to come out of Banana Day are the yard games. The Quad is used for banana toss, Kan Jam, corn hole, and other games of the like.

4. The T-shirt

Since ’96 for every year there has been a Banana Day, there has been a shirt to match. SAC gives that year’s shirts to the winners of trivia and games all day long.

5. The Originality

When I came to West Chester, I had no idea what Banana Day was or what it would be like. This day is all about the student having a fun time on a nice day. It’s something to give a try and then definitely embrace. Banana Day will have you looking forward to the third of April as soon as Spring weather comes around.

6. Golden Bananas

This was a little secret I had found last year. SAC hides golden bananas around campus for those that don’t want to participate in the games, but still want to take part in the festivities. If you’re lucky enough to find one of these guys you can return it to them and receive a free T-shirt.

7. Costumes

If you end up forgetting that Banana Day is the third Wednesday of April, you’ll get a clue when you see someone walking around in either a gorilla costume or banana costume. Whether they freak you out or not, you’ve been warned so go up to one of them to grab your next insta pic.

Make sure you check out Banana Day at the Academic Quad so you can go BANANAS.
