Oversized produce will always be fascinating. It’s something to brag about, even Zayn Malik recounted growing the biggest watermelon he’s ever seen to Sean Evans in last week’s Hot Ones episode, and then the singer posted an Instagram story of his 44-pound watermelon. Though nowhere near the largest-sized watermelon, the world’s heaviest watermelon weighed 350 pounds according to Guinness World Records, it’s still above the average 20-pound-sized watermelon. Growing such large fruits is a feat that deserves recognition. Recognition that Guinness World Records will always provide. Earlier this week, the latest record was announced — the heaviest blueberry.
How much does the heaviest blueberry weigh?
Grown by horticulturists — professionals trained in the science of plant cultivation and production — Brad Hocking, Jessica Scalzo, and Marie-France Courtois in Australia, the Behemont blueberry weighs 20.4 grams. The average blueberry weighs approximately 1.5 grams.
According to Guinness World Records, the blueberry is “4.2 g (0.14 oz) heavier than the previous record.”
“One day I hope to be as happy as this man is over his beautiful blueberry,” commented one user on the Guinness World Records’ post.
This big fruit was grown by Costa Group’s berry farm in Corindi, New South Wales. The record-breaking blueberry took a year to grow and is from the “Eterna” variety, which is one of the latest releases from Costa’s Variety Improvement Program.
Brad Hocking mentions to Guinness World Records that Eterna as a variety has a really great flavor and consistently large fruit. Apparently, there were approximately 20 other berries of a similar size and the group picked this one the morning of November 13th, 2023.
The size doesn’t affect the taste of the blueberry, and Eterna blueberries are known for their crisp texture and long shelf life.
