How to Turn Boring Foods Into Insta-Masterpieces

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Muhlenberg chapter.

We all know that when we order food, it’s not just about how it tastes, but how it looks. In a world where social media dominates our society, it’s crucial that we find the hottest spots in town, and the hottest dishes to snap. Here are a few tips that can help you get more likes on your Instagram, while also eating what you love.

1. Lighting is key

Lighting is crucial to a good photo. Honestly, sometimes your dish may not even look that aesthetically pleasing, but with all the right highlights and shadows, you’re golden. The best time to snap away is lunch, because daylight is the key to success. The toughest photos are taken at night when the lights are dimmed, and you’re forced to use a flash. Good lighting is a solid reason to try the new brunch place down the street, right? Brunch on, ladies and gents.

2. Add an accessory

While it sounds funny, your sunglasses totally add the right touch to a photo. It brings character and detail to the photo and shows a little bit more about yourself. I personally use my John Lennon style Ray Bans as a frequent accessory to my photos. It’s summer, we should acknowledge it in any way we can.

3. Location, location, location

Hip and trendy dining spots always get the most likes. When you’re on Instagram, explore your popular page, and find some new places to try out. Not only are you gaining a kick-ass photo with a ton of likes, but you may just find the newest food love of your life. Make sure when you dine, you make it clear where you’re eating, and add the restaurant location to your photo. No one likes a mystery.

4. The view

Drake clearly knows where it’s at when it comes to Views. It’s all about the angle and position you point your camera when getting your shot. There’s nothing wrong with a little birds-eye, and certainly nothing wrong with a sweet profile. It’s all about figuring out what you like. The art of photography sounds difficult, but with the previous lighting tip, you are sure to find your perfect position.

5. The background

Yes, the food is the star of the show, but it’s definitely important to focus on your background. We can’t have a chaotic mess stealing the spotlight, can we? I’m always down to add a few glasses, and silverware to add some detail, but don’t get too carried away. Stick to simple. Make that dish shine.

If you follow these simple tips, you should see the likes go up. Summer is a time for food, friends, and fun. Live it up, and take pics to show you’re clearly the shit, and that you are having the best summer ever.
