Eating the same allergen safe foods every day during Stay at Home gets old after a while but fortunately Daiya is changing up the game with vegetable crust pizzas. The crust is more than an ordinary cauliflower crust as it is made with cauliflower, sweet potato, and spinach for a sneaky serving of veggies in a pizza.
All of their products are safe for me to eat because they don’t contain dairy, soy, or peanuts, and are also good for sharing because everything is gluten-free as well. Daiya products are also egg, fish, and shellfish free. When a representative reached out to ask if I was interested in the new products, I couldn’t wait to receive them.
In addition to the Italian Herbs & Plant-based Cheeze Style pizza, both the Meatless Pepperoni Style and Mediterranean Vegetable style pizzas are made with the new vegetable crust.
I enjoyed the Italian Herbs pizza as a simple lunch the other day. As with other Daiya pizzas, they are easy to prepare – about 10 minutes in the oven and they’re ready to eat. The package says to place the pizza directly on the rack, but I was worried about getting cheeze and sauce all over my oven so I put it on a baking sheet and it still turned out fine.
The package says a serving size is 1/3 of the pizza, but I ate about half of it in one serving. The crust was softer than traditional pizza crust (which may have been due to my baking sheet) so it can be hard to cut and serve and the toppings also extend almost to the edge which can make for a messy meal.
One serving contains about 370 calories and contains 4 grams of sugar and 4 grams of protein. It contains 15 grams of fat (including 7 grams of saturated fats, but no trans fat) and 690 mg of sodium, which amounts to 29% of the recommended daily intake. One-third of the pizza also provided 25% of the recommended daily amount of calcium.
The pizza isn’t completely covered in cheeze so you don’t get a big cheese pull when you take a piece, but the balance of cheeze to sauce is appealing and you never get too much of just one in a bite. There are three flavors of cheeze (mozzarella, feta, and parmesan) which keeps the pizza from tasting bland. There is also a mixture of shredded cheeze and some larger pieces that seem to be the feta. It is also topped with oregano and parsley in addition to other flavorings for a well-rounded bite each time.
I have previously written about other Daiya pizza (and ranch dressing) as well as their recently released breakfast burritos. More information about other Daiya products can be found on their website.
