A Day in the Life of an Avocado Toast Lover

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Emory chapter.

Avocado toast — an amazing option for brunch, snack, lunch, or light dinner alike. It’s #trending. Avocado toast is the perfect meal if you are looking for something insta worthy (#foodpics am I right?)! And, the best part is, avocado toast isn’t just yummy and photo-worthy, it is also incredibly healthy. If you’re looking for fun ways to spice it up, you can easily add your own twist to it. In my opinion, versatility and aesthetic are key— it doesn’t get any better than that.

Creative “toasts” have been a “thing” for a while. Remember when everyone smothered Nutella over their toast for a “healthy” breakfast? Or peanut butter? And later started adding bananas, strawberries, and anything else they desired? Well, the trend has moved on from bananas and strawberries to another fruit – the avocado. (Yes, Avocado is technically a fruit!). Why do people love it so much? Aside from the tremendous taste, avocados are healthy.

Of course, today we are all concerned about eating healthy. That’s why many sugary toast toppings have given way to avocados. Filling, tasty, and healthy, the avocado toast craze has taken off. In fact, my nutritionist tells me that avocados are a great source of healthy fats. Between 1/4 – 1/2 of an avocado a day is the perfect superfood for many of us.

There is just one problem with avocado toast at restaurants: the cost! While the avocado toast at Ladybird in Atlanta is fabulous, the $12 price tag is enough to bust most college students’ budgets. Luckily, avocado toasts are simple to make and affordable if you make them yourself at home. And the best part is, you can make them just as yummy as the best avocado toast you have ever had from your favorite restaurant.

I don’t let a week pass by without making myself some delicious avocado toast. To make a delectable avocado toast in your dorm room, you only need a few essential ingredients to start. From there, you can add your creative twist.

Start with the obvious, the bread. You need a hearty piece of bread like a seven grain or a thick multi-grain that you can crisp up in your toaster oven. Then, you need a ripe avocado. My preference is the Haas avocado as it is consistently excellent and flavorful. From there, your personality comes in.

When I make avocado toast, I like to first add a dash of pink Himalayan salt and some lemon to the avocado and mash it all up together. I then spread that avocado mash onto the hot toasted bread right as it comes out of the toaster. From there, I throw on some diced tomatoes, cilantro, mozzarella, a sunny side up egg and maybe even some basil. This makes for a filling meal with great health benefits!

Rarely do you find healthy foods that you genuinely look forward to eating. Avocado toast has it all – the fantastic taste and the health benefits. Try it for yourself!
