If you’ve never heard the term “Shrove Tuesday” before, you’re probably wondering what the heck is this girl talking about and what does it have to do with pancakes? Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday begins and is commonly known as “Fat Tuesday.”
To keep food from going to waste, people decided to have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume the items that would be spoiled over the course of the next 40 days. So in order to use up milk, fats, and eggs, the English came up with the idea of serving pancakes. Pretty genius if you ask me.
If you’ve never had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday before, now is your chance to indulge in one of these recipes before the season of Lent begins.
1. Pancake Breakfast Sundae
Hello, this is what I call an indulgent breakfast. Take your basic pancake recipe and top it with your favorite toppings. You have to indulge some how, right?
2. Lucky Charms Pancakes
I don’t know about you, but I used to eat the marshmallows straight from the box, because that’s the only way to do it. Now you can actually put them to use in a pancake sure to make you feel lucky.
3. Funfetti Pancakes
Eat cake for breakfast with this twist on Funfetti cake. Trust me, you’ll think you’re actually eating a slice of cake after taking one bite of these pancakes.
4. Candy-Stuffed Pancakes
Now is the time to use up all that candy sitting in your pantry before Lent begins. Get creative with your favorite candies and customize it your way. You’ll thank me later when you aren’t staring at the candy longing for just one bite.
5. Boozy Bailey’s Mint Chocolate Chip Pancakes
Drink up before the Lent season with Bailey’s pancakes. Because there’s no better combination than the Irish drink and mint chocolate, so why not turn it into a pancake recipe?
6. Apple Dutch Baby Pancakes
You may think the apples in these pancakes make it healthy, but you’re wrong. Dutch pancakes are extremely buttery and irresistible.
7. Fruity Pebbles Pancakes
Growing up, this cereal was always found in our cabinet. If you really want to get your sugar fix in before Lent, these Fruity Pebble pancakes are the perfect recipe for you.
8. Nutella-Filled Chocolate Chip Banana Pancakes
I honestly believe Nutella makes everything better, just try adding it your favorite recipe. So if you’re a huge banana and Nutella fan, these pancakes are for you.
9. Oreo Pancakes
Whenever I eat Oreos I always lick the inside first, so it only makes sense to add this filling to your pancake batter. Plus, this is one of the few times it’s acceptable to eat cookies for breakfast.
10. Cinnamon Roll Pancakes
I don’t want none unless you got cinnamon buns, hun. Except we’re turning those classic buns into an epic pancake recipe.
11. Red Velvet Pancakes
Red velvet is the latest craze, so why not indulge in some red velvet pancakes before you have to give it up for a month?
12. Cocoa Pebbles Pancakes
I think you can probably sense a theme here with all the cereal-inspired pancakes since they are loaded with sugar. These pancakes will satisfy your chocolate craving and have you reminiscing on your childhood.
13. Reeses’s Puffs Pancakes
I used to love eating this cereal straight from the box as a kid (I still do, no shame). Now you can take eating it to the next level with this epic pancake recipe. You’re welcome.
14. Hot Chocolate Nutella Pancakes
This pancake recipe is a chocolate lover’s dream. If you’re a chocolate addict, I’m sure that’s what you’ll be giving up this Lent season, so why not indulge one last time?
15. Fluffer Nutter Pancakes
Another sugar-loaded food from your childhood. These pancakes combine everyone’s favorite combination of chocolate and peanut butter—Nutter Butter’s, to be exact, with Fluff.
16. Cap’n Crunch Berry Pancakes
Just look at how fun these pancakes look. You’ll be sure to get an extreme wake up call after having a stack of these.
17. Chocolate Mocha Pancakes
I live off of coffee and couldn’t even think about starting my day without it. So a pancake recipe that combines two of my favorite things is a real winner in my book. I know what I’ll be making this Lenten season, but don’t count on me for giving up both chocoalte and coffee.
18. Apple Pie Pancakes
America’s favorite dessert just got a whole new twist. Don’t feel guilty about eating your favorite pie for breakfast before you give up sweets the next few weeks. Try serving them with ice cream for an added bonus.
19. Cinnamon Toast Crunch Pancakes
Who doesn’t like Cinnamon Toast Crunch? It’s sugary and probably one of the best on the market (in my opinion). So why not combine your favorite cereal and breakfast food into one?
Pancakes are the ultimate breakfast food because they are easily customizable to your own preference. If you have a sweet tooth like me and know you’ll be giving sweets up for Lent, be sure to whip up one of these recipes before the season of Lent begins.
