The 10 Best Underrated Food Combos You’ve Been Missing Out On

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at JHU chapter.

We’ve all had that experience of eating with friends or family and realizing that they just don’t appreciate the food combo masterpiece you’ve concocted. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. After all, what could be better than taking two of your favorite foods and bringing them together? (Correct answer: nothing).

1. Fries and a Milkshake

Often served at amusement parks, this food combo is to die for. The warmth of the fries with the coldness of the shake will leave you wanting more. Typically, it’s best when the shake is a pretty standard flavor, but whether you’re a chocolate or vanilla lover, you can’t go wrong by adding fries.

2. Pretzels and Frosting (Spooey)

If you’ve partaken in a certain youth group as a teen, chances are you’re very familiar with this mix. This sweet and salty combo will have you dipping pretzels in a frosting jar for hours.

3. Applesauce and Sour Cream

Those who celebrate Hanukkah know that latkes are typically served with these two condiments for a reason.

4. Pizza and Ranch

This combo is dangerous, because once you start eating pizza and ranch together, eating them separately is no longer just as good. If ranch isn’t quite your thing but you’re still looking to add some more flavor to your pizza, balsamic vinaigrette is also a nice touch.

5. Popcorn and M&M’s

This is another sweet and salty combo that’s perfectly irresistible. Perfect for watching home movie night with some friends, or during a proper trip to the movies.

#SpoonTip: Candy at movie theaters is super expensive, so try sneaking some fun-sized packs of M&M’s in your pocket. You can thank me later.

6. Mashed Potatoes and Corn Niblets

This probably seems kind of strange, but trust me on this one. Besides the great flavor combo that results, the corn adds some texture to the mashed potatoes, which allows for a better consistency than just its usual mushy state.

7. Eggs with Ketchup

Although this isn’t the classiest of combos, you’d be lying if you said you haven’t tried this at least once. Sometimes eggs are dry and just need a little something, and that’s where the ketchup does its magic.

8. Orange Juice and Fresca

This isn’t exactly a food combo, but hey–drink combos can still be just as good. This concoction is very sweet so it certainly isn’t for everyone, but if you like sweet drinks, you’re almost guaranteed to fall in love with this spritzer.

#SpoonTip: If you have problems with acidic foods/drinks, this probably isn’t the drink for you.

9. Carrots and Peanut Butter

The only reason this combo could make you mad is if you didn’t know about it and have been missing out. I’m personally a fan of creamy/smooth peanut butter, but I guess it works the same if you’re into chunky peanut butter (although you shouldn’t be).

10. Chicken and Polynesian Sauce

Most people are familiar with dipping their chicken nuggets in ketchup, honey mustard, and barbecue sauce, but Polynesian sauce is a great alternative that will still leave you wanting more.
