Working out is extremely important to maintaining a healthy mind, body, and soul. However, what you may not know is that recovery days can be just as good for you, if not better, in healing the body. Here are seven ways to chill out to make the most of your day off.

1. Take a hot bath

Studies have shown that a hot bath can be just as beneficial as a moderate-level workout. The high thermal temperature of the bath is amazing for muscle soreness and the steam opens pores and stimulates the lymphatic system for glowing skin.

2. Meditate

Breathing exercises and meditation are great forms of active rest that can boost energy levels, reduce anxiety, and aid in digestive health. Taking a moment to focus on your breath and settle your mind is very important for a healthy mind, body, and soul. If your brain is scattered, how can you possibly take care of your body?

3. Journal

Writing in a journal is also a great way to support mental health. Journalling promotes mindfulness and awareness of one's actions. It has also been shown to boost memory and comprehension. Just taking a few minutes to jot down some thoughts can go a long way.

4. Eat something delicious

Treating yourself to your favorite cheat meal is a great way to reward yourself for the hard work you've put into the gym and spend time with your friends and family. Being able to indulge is very important in promoting a guilt-free relationship with food, and controlling urges that may happen during the week.

5. Catch up on Errands

Rest days don't have to be just hanging around the house and in bed — now is a great time to get some fresh air, catch up on household errands, cleaning, cooking. It is very satisfying to tie up loose ends around the house and keep everything running smoothly.

6. Start your meal prep

Any fitness foodie knows the best way to eliminate meal time stress and get all the macros and micros you need is to plan. Prepping your meals for the following week will insure no splurging mid-week and will make sure your getting the proper nutrients.

7. At-home Spa Treatments

No spa? No problem. Homemade face masks and hair masks are readily available all over google and are super natural as well as beneficial for your skin. Sometimes taking the time to put on a robe, sit, and read magazines while your face mask sets can be super cathartic and almost feel like the real thing!

I hope these were helpful tips for things to enjoy on those well deserved rest days. Health isn't all about being fit and working out — it's just as important to let those muscles heal and let your mind be at ease.
