How to Make Your Own Cold Brew Coffee

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Bucknell chapter.

Now that it’s summer, it seems like everyone is craving a cup of iced coffee. Yet a simple cup of iced coffee just doesn’t cut it anymore. Instead, cold brew coffee is the new and improved iced coffee.

Cold brew coffee is unique because it’s brewed without any heat. This requires a longer process where coffee is extracted over a 12 hour period. While this may seem like a long time to wait for your perfect cup of iced coffee, I promise it’s worth it.

I am a huge fan of cold brew coffee because it’s smoother and less acidic than regular iced coffee. It’s easier on my stomach and I think it honestly tastes a lot better. While many coffee companies and cafés are producing cold brew coffee this summer, you can follow this easy recipe to make your own.

Feel accomplished AND save some money.

Instructions

Measure one cup of any type of coffee beans.

Use a coffee grinder to coarsely grind the beans. (Coarsely ground doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be any whole beans, but rather, it means to not over-grind the beans).

Put the coarsely ground beans in a pitcher and fill the pitcher with the room temperature water. Once filled, use a spoon to mix the water and beans. Let the mixture sit in the pitcher for 12 hours (no need to put it in the fridge).

After 12 hours, use a coffee filter to strain the coffee. (Repeat this twice for best results).

Serve your cold brew coffee however you like it. Personally, I like adding a few ice cubes and a splash of almond milk.
