How to be Gluten Free in Boston

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at BC chapter.

Although I couldn’t imagine giving up pizza or pasta, millions of people around America are gluten free, either due to an intolerance or by choice. In fact, about 75% of all gluten free people in the US actively made the choice in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle. Although being gluten free may seem like a burden to some, it can be a fun way to try new things and explore food in a way you never thought you could. Check out these tips for the best ways to enjoy being gluten free in Boston!

TIP #1: Try a gluten free restaurant option

Due to an increasing demand for more gluten free options, tons of restaurants around the city have incorporated delicious gluten free entrees and sides into their menus–some where you’d least expect it! Head to Atlantic Fish Co. for a classic Boston dining experience or, if you’re feeling adventurous, check out Myers + Cheng for a full gluten free dim sum menu.

TIP #2: Indulge in something sweet

Take a break from shopping on Newbury Street and pop into Georgetown Cupcake for a delicious gluten free cupcake or head to Modern Pastry in the renowned North End for a classic cannoli sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. With tons of bakeries and ice cream shops around Boston, you’re bound to find something tasty.

TIP #3: Attend a sporting event

Arguably known as the best sports town in America, Boston is a city full of crazy fans, rowdy sports bars, a couple championship parades per year (if we’re lucky), and, most importantly, stadiums with inclusive food options! If you’re heading to Fenway Park to catch a Red Sox game, be sure to stop by one of the food stands to grab a hotdog or hamburger on a gluten free bun for the perfect game-watching snack.

TIP #4: Cook a meal at home

Despite all the gluten free food options Boston has to offer, sometimes there’s nothing better than doing it yourself! Promise Gluten Free has tons of base bread options like buns, bread loaves, rolls, and cakes that you can transform into delicious recipes or just enjoy their own. Try making avocado toast, a bread based breakfast casserole, French toast, a loaded cheeseburger, or even breaded chicken breasts–the options are truly endless and you won’t even be able to taste the difference!
