The Topsfield Fair is a local county fair located in Massachusetts, and is considered to be one of America’s oldest agricultural festivals. Started by the Essex County Agricultural Society as a cattle show, the week long event has now spread to encompass games, rides, and a variety of foods people from all over the North Shore come to partake. Walking through the large array of food stands can be overwhelming– that’s why I’m here to tell you the must try foods at this year’s (and every year’s) Topsfield Fair.
Deep-Fried Snickers (or anything fried, really)
When one thinks of fair food, often the first thing to come to mind is anything battered, fried, and covered in grease. If you want this stereotype, look no further: the fried snickers at the Great American Funnel Cake booth hits every mark. From the powdered sugar to the impressive display of choices, no stand really says “America” like their option to deep fry a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for $7. Every year, this is my go-to and a must-try favorite. Caution: do not eat before going on rides.
Learned’s Apple Pie
Another long withstanding tradition of the fairgrounds is Learned’s apple crisp (ā la mode of course). The popularity of this pop-up shop is evident in the long queue waiting to get a taste of their famous apple desserts. You may believe any apple crisp at the fair may due– but that is simply not the case. Learneds’ the best in the game and worth the extra wait for a truly extraordinary and delicious must-try apple crisp only available once a year.
ChipStix
When you first hear “potato on a stick” many visuals may run through your mind. None compare to the amazing taste of trying it in person. The ChipStix potato on a stick is a spiralized, deep-fried (are you sensing a theme?) potato covered in a salted seasoning of your choice. Although it is not the easiest to eat, this is perhaps the most important way to try a potato. It’s truly life changing. Personally, my favorite flavors were salt and vinegar or salt and pepper. You can’t really go wrong with any of their must try choices, though.
Grilled Cheese
Ever wanted to try a sustainably made grilled cheese? Look no further. At Bees and Thank You, there’s an array of must-try grilled cheese sandwiches that actually help the environment. This stand sells delicious grilled cheese while also working to rebuild the depleting bee population. Need even more reason to visit the stand? Each grilled cheese comes on Texas toast with a twang of honey. A truly delicious and unique, guilt-free experience at the fair. They have vegan options too!
As fair season comes to an end, many of us worry about missing out on the delicious food that only comes around once a year. Nothing to worry about though, because if you get left behind, there’s 365 days to plan your next route of attack. For now, get your list of must try foods at the Topsfield Fair ready, so next season you know exactly where to go. Did you take my advice on the must try foods at the Topsfield Fair stands?
