The other day I was roaming the aisles of the Stop and Shop health food section (just foodie things) and came across a bag of “Nutter Puffs.” Being that nut butter is one of my main food groups, I immediately took the bag off the shelf. I’m always on the search for new peanut butter products, so this was an especially exciting find, as I had never seen something quite like it before.
I was really excited to see that Popchips was the mastermind behind these nutter puffs because I’m familiar with most of the ingredients found in their other products and support the way their chips are made. Popchips is one of the leading “healthy” air-popped chip companies, for those unfamiliar. They normally carry savory flavors such as original potato, salt and vinegar, barbeque, aged white cheddar, sour cream and onion, which appeal to people who crave the flavors found in a traditional bag of chips. I do enjoy these as well but was pleasantly surprised to find a sweet and salty flavor such as peanut butter.
The Flavor and Texture
It was definitely smart on Popchips’ part to create a puff, rather than the traditional chips for this flavor. Think peanut butter cheez doodle with this product, that is the best comparison I can think to give. Also, if anyone is familiar with Trader Joes’ Bamba, it is very similar to that.
The Nutter Puffs come in three different flavors: original peanut butter, peanut butter & chocolate, and peanut butter & honey. I only went ahead and taste tested the original peanut butter, as it is the basis for the other two flavors (and the only one available at my particular stop and shop). People have really been raving about the other two flavors though, so definitely give those a try as well!
The immediate flavor of Nutter Puffs is obviously peanut butter, but I just want to clarify that it is not that fake, sugary tasting peanut butter. These Nutter Puffs have that true, rich peanut buttery goodness to them. They are honestly so natural tasting, making it difficult to solely eat a few! Also, I’m a major fan of the crunchy texture; it makes me feel like a kid eating cheez doodles again!
The Nutrition Facts
To be completely honest, I was a bit nervous to look at the nutrition facts when I picked up the bag from the shelf. I was expecting to see a whole list of unpronounceable ingredients, loads of sugar, and sodium, but the verdict was completely different. There are three ingredients in Nutter Puffs – THREE; peanut butter, yellow corn, and peanut flour. This is definitely one of the main reasons as to why Nutter Puffs taste like eating peanut butter straight up from the jar.
In addition to the small list of ingredients, I have some more good news about Nutter Puffs: 1g of saturated fat, 0g of trans fat, 2g of sugar, and 5g of protein. Yes I know you must be curious about the so-called “bad stuff;” I’m not going to lie, there is some sodium and carbs. Overall this really is a low calorie AND amazingly tasty snack. Who wouldn’t be excited right now?!
Nutter Puffs can be purchased at a variety of supermarkets, targets, and even at a select few CVS locations. Make sure to check out where they can be purchased near you. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone whose a peanut butter lover looking a new, interesting snack!
