8 Weird Taco Fillings That Are Actually Delicious

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Minnesota chapter.

Whether you experienced authentic tacos on your Spring Break trip to Mexico, or you’ve only had the taste of Americanized ones, I’m sure we can all agree on one thing: tacos are the greatest. However, that doesn’t go without saying that sometimes topping them with grilled chicken, lettuce and cheese can be a tad boring. Here’s a list of eight uniquely delicious taco fillings to try if you feel like spicing up your taco craving.

1. Sauteed Zucchini Tacos

If you’re a fan of veggies, this one is for you. Sautéed zucchini adds in a fresh, juicy flavor and goes perfectly with any taco filling. Try adding sautéed zucchini to your chicken, beef, and vegetarian tacos to amp up the flavor.

2. Fried Avocado

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but fried avocados taste amazing in tacos. Frying the avocado instead of using guac gives it a warm, extra buttery, one-of-a-kind flavor.

3. Fried Onion Tacos

When has fried food ever been not good? Try turning your taco into a burger by adding in ground beef, cheese, lettuce, and fried onions. Whether it’s onion rings or strands, this is sure to be a flavor-booster.

4. Mango

If you’re looking to do a complete 180, switch out the spiciness for a little bit of sweetness by adding in mango. You can usually find salsas with added mango already, or you can make your own.

5. Sesame Chicken

Can’t decide between Chipotle or Panda Express? Fill your tacos with sesame chicken or orange chicken for a surprising new flavor.

6. Fried Chicken Strips

If you’re apartment is running low on “adult” food, I’m with you. But fear no more! You can still make a pretty decent meal by cooking up some chicken strips or chicken nuggets and tossing them in a taco shell with bacon, avocado, and spicy ranch. If Taco Bell can do it, so can you.

7. Spaghetti and Meatballs

“iCarly fans,” where you at?! Spencer’s go-to is about to become your new favorite. To completely switch up your taco game, fill the shell with spaghetti and meatballs for an Italian twist on this Mexican favorite.

8. Ice Cream

My personal favorite, dessert tacos, are a true delicacy. Add in marshmallows, ice cream, chocolate sauce, fruit, candy, or whatever sweets you’re craving for the most beautiful taco you’ll ever lay your eyes on. Seriously.

When you think of tacos, you probably think of your standard meat and cheese variety. But keep an open mind and a taco can be whatever you want it to be.

There you have it! I don’t know about yours, but my personal favorites are dessert tacos and chicken strip tacos. Which ones will you be trying?
