The Best Vegetarian Fast Food Options at 9 Popular Chains

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at CU Boulder chapter.

I gave up red meat going into 6th grade, and have since become a pescatarian (I consume fish as my only “meat” protein). However, when it comes to fast food, I stick to a vegetarian fast food diet, meaning I don’t trust the fish and will stick to the vegetarian options only. Since taking up this lifestyle, I’ve had to navigate some tricky situations when it comes to fast food. However, I’ve found some decent vegetarian fast food options over the years. Here are some of my favorite orders.

McDonald’s

When it comes to Mcdonald’s, it’s fair for a vegetarian to be disappointed in their limited selection of meatless options. While one can opt for a side salad or a smoothie, that won’t satisfy your needs. Thankfully, they serve breakfast all day, so opt for an egg McMuffin and yogurt parfait. You’ll get the perfect blend of protein, healthy carbs, fats, and fiber.

#SpoonTip: Here are all the vegetarian options at McDonald’s.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell’s vegetarian fast food menu has myriad veggie-forward options. When looking for a meatless meal here, go for the classic bean burrito, the spicy potato soft taco, the veggie power bowl, a cheesy roll-up or cheese quesadilla, and sides of chips and cheese, black beans, etc. Full of flavor, protein, and meat-free! Plus, their cinnamon twists and Cinnabon delights are delicious snack and dessert options.

Subway

Subway is probably the easiest place to get vegetarian fast food on this list, besides Chipotle. Simply build your own sandwich with some cheese, hard boiled egg (if they offer it and/or if you like it), and all the vegetables you could want!

Burger King

Did you guys know that Burger King now has Morning Star burgers? I was shocked when I saw this, but in the best way possible. While they may not be the healthiest veggie burger option out there, it’s a great vegetarian fast food option for when you’re in a bind. Plus, you can also grab an Impossible Whopper, too. BK also offers many vegetarian breakfast options.

Chipotle

Next to Subway, Chipotle is the best vegetarian fast food place around. When looking for a hearty meal, opt for a burrito bowl with beans, brown rice, fajita vegetables, salsa, and some lettuce. Oh, and guacamole—no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it.

Shake Shack

Have you guys ever had a mushroom burger? If not, prepare to have your mind blown by the Shake Shack Shroom Burger. Using a fried portobello mushroom instead of beef, this burger is full of flavor. It’s not a “secret menu” option, so you don’t have to worry about them not serving it. It’s the perfect vegetarian fast food option for a burger chain.

Chick-fil-A

Sadly, Chick Fil A is built upon the motto of putting chicken in anything they can. While you can ask for your salad to have no chicken, that’s a little depressing. They do have some decent breakfast options, so if you’re in a bind, go for one of their buttered biscuits with fruit cup or yogurt parfait. Plus, their yummy waffle fries are completely vegetarian.

In-N-Out

In-N-Out is a California staple, so it’s no surprise they’d have a vegetarian option, considering the state is known for vegetarianism and veganism. While this isn’t on the main menu, you can ask for a grilled cheese. Pair that with a milkshake and you have the perfect meal.

Wendy’s

While Wendy’s is a lot like Chick-fil-A in terms of vegetarian options, it is a little better. They don’t have any vegetarian burgers on U.S. menus, but hopefully that changes soon. As for an entree, I recommend the apple pecan salad without chicken, as it still contains plenty of healthy fats, protein, and carbohydrates.

There you have it! Vegetarian fast food doesn’t have to be difficult or overdone. While these may not be the best options for vegetarian dining, it’s better than not eating at all, and you can still enjoy the meal! Always have extra snacks with you when traveling in case one of these options doesn’t suit you.
