I Tried The Starbucks Zombie Frappuccino, and This Is What I Thought

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Ole Miss chapter.

Six months following the disaster that was the Unicorn Frappuccino, Starbucks released its sister drink: The Limited-time Zombie Frappuccino. Because my Starbucks experience went so well in April (just kidding, it was a complete and epic fail) I trekked back to the popular coffee shop and I tried Starbucks Zombie Frappuccino. Here are my thoughts.

Blind Taste Testing

Before I went to Starbucks and tried the Zombie Frap, I made sure not to read any reviews about the drink, or even what it was made of. I wanted to have an authentic experience without any preconceived notions.

I will note that when I tried the Unicorn Frappuccino, they were almost sold out when I placed my order, but the Starbucks barista said that they had plenty more ingredients to make more Zombie Fraps.

Dolla Dolla Bill Y’all

Be prepared to pay a pretty penny if you want a sip of this limited-time concoction. I ordered a tall (that’s a small in Starbucks language) and it was almost $6. I’m sure the barista noticed my jaw drop as I reluctantly swiped my debit card at the counter. I could not believe how expensive it was. For that price, you would think the dead zombie drink would offer you eternal life or something.

Was I just cat fished?

But, seriously though…

After they called my name, I noticed that the drink did not look much like the picture advertised. I know that the whipped cream was supposed to look like a brain, but mine just looked like purple frosting.

The drink itself was advertised as a green frozen drink with what was supposed to look like red blood oozing down the side. My drink was green, but the syrup looked more purple than red. Just sayin’.

The Actual Taste Results

The drink itself did not taste bad at all. It greatly resembled a candied apple lollipop without the caramel flavoring inside.

I kept waiting for the drink to turn horribly sour like my previous experience, but I was able to finish the entire Frappuccino without hating myself.

After doing some more research, I found that the tall was only 190 calories. While this isn’t the best, considering it’s a small drink, if you really want to try it, less than 200 calories is not going to ruin your diet.

The Aftermath

Growing up in the South, drinking sweet tea helped me handle the Zombie Frap sugar rush… because it is REAL in this drink. When I checked the nutritional facts (or lack of) online, I found that a tall had a whopping 35 grams of sugar, which is quite a lot if you ask me.

Although I probably wouldn’t order the Zombie Frappuccino again, I think that it was very fun to try. You can definitely take some cool, spooky Instagram or Halloween pictures with the limited-time beverage (as long as you don’t mind paying the hefty price)!

All in all, this experience was definitely better than my previous one when I tried the Unicorn Frappuccino… bleh!

#SpoonTip: Get ’em while they’re hot (er, cold?). These Zombie Frapps will only be in stores Oct. 26-31.
