The 17 Places With the Best Breakfast Sandwiches in NYC

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Georgetown chapter.

After a night out on the town, there’s nothing better than a good ole breakfast sandwich. You’d think that that would be easy to find in NYC, but with such a high volume of breakfast bodega offerings, it’s hard to separate the okay from the goddamn delicious. Here are the best breakfast sandwiches in NYC so that you never have to wander around hungover again.

#SpoonTip: Don’t limit yourself to bagels when you’re in the city. Because New Yorkers are famed bagel snobs, there are a bunch of bagel options on this list. However, NYC also packs some other high quality breakfast grains, so I’m going to highlight those too.

1. Black Seed Bagels

With locations in Nolita, Battery Park City, and the East Village, Black Seed Bagels are in reach for any downtown biddie. All bagels are hand-rolled and wood-fired, and there are six different types of BEC sandwiches to choose from.

2. Egg Shop

The Egg Shop is incredibly bougie, but these breakfast sandwiches are worth the double digit price tag. The Egg Shop BEC is a true classic with a broken egg, black forest jam, tomato jam, and jalapeños on a panini roll, but you can also order some healthy options with the gluten-free English muffins and egg white substitutes,

3. Space Market

If you’re looking for a truly stuffed breakfast sandwich, hit up the Space Market. One major plus: Space Market is on Seamless, so you won’t even have to leave your house for one of these bad boys.

4. Harry & Ida’s Meat and Supply Co.

Harry & Ida’s will provide the classic NY pastrami experience you saw in When Harry Met Sally (is this movie still relevant?!? Am I aging myself? #sos). This place is the less touristy version of Katz Deli, and they separate themselves with their toppings (think dill, cucumber, kraut, oysters, mint pesto, and more).

5. Sunday in Brooklyn

There’s nowhere better to spend a Sunday in Brooklyn than at Sunday in Brooklyn (I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself). I love the intense dedication this place puts into its ingredients and add-ons.

6. Russ & Daughters

Russ & Daughters is a mom-and-pop deli that provides some of the best bagel and lox around. Anthony Bourdain, who is known to be hyper critical, even loves this restaurant, stating, “Russ & Daughters occupies that rare and tiny place on the mountaintop reserved for those who are not just the oldest and the last – but also the best.

7. Daily Provisions

Danny Meyer is most famous for his formal restaurants, such as Gramercy Tavern or The Modern at MoMA, but his casual locale, Daily Provisions, should not be overlooked. The Bacon Sandwich is a highlight for breakfast, and be sure to order some Wake Up Sauce on the side to kickstart your day.

8. High Street on Hudson

Though High Street on Hudson is mainly known for their avocado toast, this West Village cafe also serves up a fab breakfast sandwich. The Meatpacker is perfect if you’re looking for a rich combo of breakfast sausage, old bay fried potatoes, and fresh farm eggs to soak up any remaining alc.

9. The Bagel Store

Though the rainbow bagel is slightly past peak, it’s still worth the trip to The Bagel Store for an insta of the OG rainbow bagel. Order the funfetti shmear for sweet treat, or a BEC if you’re looking for a classic NYC breakfast.

10. David’s Bagels

This place is a super low-key and classic NYC bagelry, but what it lacks in pretension it makes up for in flavor. Head to David’s Bagel if you want a high quality bagel but you’re not in the mood to wait in line.

11. Dimes

If you’re trying to be ~healthy~ after last night’s debauchery, Dimes is your spot. This LES eatery packs in scrambled eggs with fresh avocado and homemade hot sauce for a delicious hangover cure.

12. Saltie

This Southern bakery is famous for its Ship Biscuit, which combines soft scrambled eggs and ricotta cheese. Saltie is famous for their bread, and Infatuation described it “as good as bread gets [and it] is the secret weapon that makes all of Saltie’s sandwiches so good.”

13. Tompkins Square Bagels

You’re gonna have to wait in line for this. Tompkins Square Bagels are heavily captured on Insta, and the foodgasm-inducing cheese pulls explain why.

14. Chef’s Club Counter

Chef’s Club Counter offers a rotating menu of delicious eats from around the world, and they always present breakfast standouts. The famous LA eatery, Eggslut, just ended their residency at Chef’s Club Counter, but these new open faced eggy delights by Chef Alvin Cailan are a worthy substitute.

15. Murray’s Bagels

This Greenwich Village bagelry is perfectly located for any NYU student after a night out. Murray’s Bagel relies on the highest quality of smoked salmon for its breakfast sandwiches, so I would definitely opt for lox with your bagel.

16. Frankel’s Pastrami

Grub Street ranked Frankel’s Pastrami as one of the best egg sandwiches in the Big Apple. Order the Pastrami, Egg, and Cheese, and don’t be afraid of that American cheese filling.

17. Mile End

A breakfast sandwich with a cinnamon roll as the bread. This BEC from the Mile End is what dreams are made of.

Whether you’re looking for bagels, pastrami, or loaded egg sammies, we’ve got you covered as far as the best breakfast sandwiches in NYC are concerned.
