5 Fitness Classes on UChicago’s Campus You Need to Try Before Graduating

The weather is getting warmer and it’s almost time for you to showcase your summer body. Try the following fitness classes that are offered at UChicago to get a head start on getting more fit!

Zumba

Whether you’re a workout enthusiast or novice, zumba is a great fitness class that anyone can partake in. It’s an exercise that incorporates Latin rhythms and easy dance movements. What more could you want than to have fun while you’re working out?

Classes are offered at the Ratner Center Dance Studio on Tuesday and Thursdays from 8:15-9:05 a.m., on Sunday from 10-10:50 a.m. and at Crown Multipurpose Room on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:15-6:05 p.m.

Yoga

If you prefer relaxation and a less strenuous workout, yoga should be your go-to fitness class. Both beginner and intermediate levels of this class are offered where you can learn the breathing basics and several poses that increase your strength and flexibility.

Beginner classes are held at Ratner Center Dance Studio on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-1 p.m. or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 a.m. Intermediate classes are held at Ratner as well on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:40-7:30 p.m.

Cardio Kickboxing

This class is fast paced and a guaranteed fat and calorie burning workout. It combines shadow kickboxing moves with fast-paced conditioning and core-strengthening abdominal work.

Held in Ratner Center Dance Studio, cardio kickboxing is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7-8 a.m. or on Saturdays from 8:15-9:15 a.m.

Pilates

Pilates works on both strength and flexibility. It’s similar to yoga, but places an emphasis on stabilization with proper movement. It’s an exercise that anyone at any level of physical fitness can attempt.

Pilates classes are in Ratner Center Dance Studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-12:50 p.m.

Barre

Barre is based on ballet. This class focuses on improving flexibility and balance while strengthening and lengthening muscles. The barre fitness classes include a warm-up, ballet barre for the lower body and a flexibility and core workout at the end. 

Go to barre class in Ratner Center Dance Studio on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:20 p.m.

With all of these great fitness classes offered right on campus, make sure to attempt at least one before the end of spring quarter!
