10 Totally Underappreciated Foods That Deserve More Hype

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at FSU chapter.

It seems like everyone is going crazy for super basic foods like cupcakes, sushi and pretty much anything avocado related. Sadly, some really yummy foods have been left in the dust along the way — and so I think now is the time to give credit where credit is due, for totally underappreciated foods that are still so heavenly.

1. Monkey Bread

Little balls of dough that are covered in cinnamon, butter and a sweet glaze — I dare you to find something wrong with that sentence. This dessert is seriously not given the justice it deserves, and is totally undermined when compared to your basic cakes and cookies.

2. Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos

Probably the most low key of all the Dorito flavors.

The Sweet Chili Dorito is obviously sweet and also a little spicy, but an overall solid choice if you’re looking to stray away from the same old Nacho cheese or Cool Ranch flavors.

3. Honey Smacks

This cereal is so underappreciated; and yet it is so easy to down three bowls of it in one sitting. Just look for a bright red box with “Dig’Em” the frog chilling on the front — I guarantee you will never go back to only eating Fruity Pebbles and Frosted Flakes.

4. McDonald’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Let’s be real there is a 99.9% chance the ice cream machine will be broken, and the probability of getting a McFlurry is slim. There’s no need to be disappointed, though, because McDonald’s has chocolate chip cookies that are warm and literally melt in your mouth.

I don’t know why these don’t get enough hype.

5. Popcorn Chicken

It’s crispy, it’s bite-sized and it’s totally underappreciated. Popcorn chicken deserves some more credit, for real — its fried chicken that you can eat on the go and the pieces are tiny, so you can eat about twenty of them and not feel that bad afterward.

6. Kiwi

I felt like I had to add at least one healthy thing to this list.

Kiwi not only has a ton of health benefits and a fresh exotic flavor, but it is also great if you want to add something not-so basic to your super basic açaí bowl

7. Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Why eat plain wonder bread, when you can have it swirled with cinnamon and plump juicy raisins? Cinnamon Raisin bread takes boring old bread and totally amps it up — toast it and add some butter for that perfect sweet and salty bite.

8. Brownie Brittle

For those who always go for the crispy corner piece of a batch of brownies, you need to show some serious appreciation for this treat. Brownie Brittle is a crunchy thin brownie chip that tastes exactly like fresh baked brownie.

Once you start you can’t stop, and before you know it the whole bag is gone in one sitting.

9. Funyuns

Funyuns: out of the ordinary, fun to eat and in need of some recognition.

They’re like sour cream and onion chips, but have their own unique flavor and an extremely crunchy onion ring shape.

10. Mallomars

The old-school cookie that’s been around forever, but somehow always gets overlooked next to the Oreos.

Mallomars start with graham cracker on the bottom, fluffy marshmallow in the center and are then completely submerged in chocolate. I mean everyone loves s’mores, so this cookie should be real a winner, just saying.

Well, maybe you’ve had one too many slices of avocado toast, or filled your “make your own froyo” cup a little too high — just remember that there are tons of foods waiting for a spot in the limelight. So show some love for the good stuff, and stuff your face with these tasty, underappreciated foods
