King Dough: Heating up Bloomington’s Pizza Scene

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at IU chapter.

Even though King Dough has only been open for a little over a year in Bloomington, owners Adam and Alicia Sweet have been perfecting their pizza craft for over 13 years. The passion for pizza that started working in a little pizza spot in Arkansas has evolved into a local hotspot.

Adam and Alicia left everything behind in Arkansas to start a pizza business in Bloomington. They began with a mobile wood-fired pizza oven, where they would pop-up around town. From there, the King Dough storefront in Bloomington opened. Now, a new location will be opening in Indianapolis within the next year.

Their success has been due in part because Alicia and Adam recognized the need for wood-fired pizza in the area. They have been able to fill that void with a farm-to-table mission. They even have some of their farmers working as servers during their off season.

King Dough locally sources as many ingredients as they can. They pride themselves on being a clean, affordable place to eat.

What to Expect

King Dough is the only wood-fired pizza place in town. They follow the Neapolitan style guidelines of pizza from Italy, such as pulling their own mozzarella and using San Marzano tomatoes. You can expect a thin, but slightly chewy dough with a little bit of char on the crust. They are all about using simple and local ingredients to make their food delicious.

If you’ve never been to King Dough before, Alicia recommends the house-made meatballs topped with ricotta or the Cobb salad for an appetizer. For pizza, favorites include the Prosciutto Arugula, Margarita or Sweet Bee. Also, don’t miss out on their always changing selection of gelato or sorbet. They’ve had flavors like cookie butter, Frosted Flakes and Rocky Road.

The Deals

College students are all about scoring deals on food, and King Dough has some to offer. On Monday, they have $10 Margherita pizzas. On Tuesday, they have a salad and pizza for $22, and on Wednesday and Sunday, they have $1 off draft beers to wash it all down.

Also, they occasionally offer special pizzas that they post to their social media, like their burrata, shaved brussel sprouts, artichoke, bacon, and parmesan special pizza from a month ago.

The New Location

While it still has a ways to go, they will be opening up a new location in Indy with a target date of October 2017. Plans for now include a wood fired grill and oven and partnering with many different restaurants. They also plan on carrying beer from more Indy breweries, as their new location will be close to many of them.

If you haven’t been, go out and support this local business—you won’t be disappointed.
