The 20 Places to Eat in Bergen County, NJ When You’re Broke as Sh*t

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Colgate chapter.

Bergen County is jam-packed with some of the best restaurants in New Jersey, from authentic Jersey diners to high-end favorites. However, it may seem nearly impossible to eat somewhere within budget. This list will prepare you to eat some of the best food Bergen County has to offer without making a dent in your wallet.

1. Nellie’s Place

Nellie’s is known for their thin crust pies, yet there is so much more to try. The Elkin wings are also a fan favorite, as well as the self-serve salad bar. This affordable family-oriented sports bar is packed with Waldwick patrons on the weekends, so make sure to get there early to try some of their amazing dinner options.

2. Bagel Emporium

Bagel Emporium in Midland Park is the perfect spot for much-needed brunch on Sunday after a long weekend. For less than $5, you’ll be in bagel heaven with a New Jersey classic taylor ham egg and cheese.

3. Benny’s Bakery and Ice Cream Shoppe

For under $10, Benny’s Bakery and Ice Cream Shoppe produces some of the most intense baked goods you’ve ever seen. Masterpieces like the Cannoli Bennassants (croissant donuts) or their wide selection of “Crazy Shakes” (think Black Tap) are hard to beat.

4. Johnny and Hange’s

Johnny and Hange’s could seriously be the reason why New Jersey is known for its hot dogs. Established in 1939, the old school joint offers each menu item “all the way,” which is code for mustard, onions, and their signature chili sauce. What’s better is the fact that hot dogs are just $2.29, burgers are $2.99, and fries are $2.59. When you’re parking, make sure not to take the spot reserved for Elvis!

5. Tito’s Burritos

Tito’s Burritos in downtown Ridgewood hits the spot when it comes to your burrito needs. With $8.95 you’ll be able to try some of their signature burritos, such as the Bird is the Word or the Maui Wowie. They also offer a dozen wings for just $11.95 with your choice of six different sauce options.

6. CU Latte

$5 crepes, $3 lattes…yes please! CU Latte in Cresskill is the quintessential brunch stop. They even draw adorable Nutella designs on their crepes!

One word: JET. You simply cannot go to Park Wood Deli, a hidden corner store on the border of Ridgewood and Midland Park (hence its name), without ordering the Jet. The Jet originated as a sandwich with chicken cutlet, cheddar, buffalo sauce, and ranch dressing. Its popularity has allowed it to adapt many forms, such as the Jet pizza or Jet calzone. Not only does Park Wood serve up some of the best deli sandwiches and pizzas in Bergen County, but you will leave without a dent in your wallet.

8. Big Bowls Little Plates Noodle House

As college students, we have come to know and love the art of ramen. Big Bowls Little Plates in Rutherford also embraces a love for ramen and Asian fusion cuisine. The restaurant’s casual atmosphere and unique decor creates an exciting and affordable dining experience. “Little plates” range from $2.95 to $6.95, offering twists on your favorite Asian classics such as swordfish dumplings and Szechuan ravioli.

When seeking quality Mexican cuisine, Jalapeños in Glen Rock should be your go-to. On Mondays through Saturdays until 4:00 P.M., be sure to order the $9 Lunch Special. I’d recommend the Fajita Salad or, if you’re feeling ambitious, try Lunch Combo 1, which includes a taco, enchilada, and burrito. For just $9, anything is possible.

10. Anthony Franco’s

Anthony Franco’s takes pride in serving high quality, fresh ingredients on their authentic Italian pies at a low price. 14. Suburban Diner

Suburban Diner in Paramus just gets it. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, they’ve got you covered. For $8.50 try one of their specialty buttermilk pancakes, such as Nutella s’mores or apple cinnamon.

15. Yogybee

Despite Yogybee’s quaint, nondescript location on Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick, their vast selection of smoothies, wraps, and salads make up for it. Quick service paired with affordable prices make Yogybee the perfect lunch destination. Or, you can stop in just to appease your sweet tooth with their frozen yogurt.
