There’s nothing like starting off your morning by biting into a warm, gooey bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. It’s simply delicious.
When people ask me what my favorite food is, I’m quick to say BEC. Other than being a breakfast item (which is my favorite meal of the day), it’s a hearty, American classic that’s tough to mess-up.
I taste-tested Chick-fil-A’s Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Biscuit sandwich against Shake Shack’s exclusive breakfast sandwich. Holding high stakes for both chains, I was surprised at our discovery of who does it better.
Shake Shack
Shake Shack only serves breakfast at three exclusive locations — soon to add one more to the list. I went to its underground, Grand Central location to get my coveted BEC.
I’ve never had a Shake Shack breakfast sandwich before, and it was time for me to take the plunge. I hold BEC to a high standard, and with my current love for Shake Shack, I had a feeling I might fall in love with its breakfast sandwich.
I ordered my Shake Shack Bacon Egg’N Cheese and waited with anticipation. It was a pretty solid wait for 9:00 am. Finally, I got my sandwich and quickly sat down to devour it.
I looked at the simple breakfast sandwich with awe. It’s different than others I’ve seen. Instead of a bagel or an English muffin, it’s a toasted burger bun.
I take a bite and my first thought is, “Is there chicken in this?”
I know that’s a weird thought to have, but I had to double-check. I could have sworn I tasted chicken. I dissected the sandwich with curiosity, no chicken. Weird.
I took another bite. This time, iI got the full taste of smokey bacon, half-melted cheese, and salty fried egg. No chicken.
The sandwich as a whole is basic. And for $5.22, it doesn’t offer anything spectacular as a breakfast sandwich, and I thought it left a strange after-taste (chicken?). The buttered burger bun is the only thing that gives it a little edge, yet it’s overpowered by a slab of unmelted American cheese. I like that it’s a fried egg because it complements the smokiness of the bacon. But overall, this sandwich is rather bland, and I was left feeling disappointed in my beloved burger chain.
Chick-fil-A
I’ve never had Chick-fil-A breakfast. But I have a friend who says it’s worth waking up for. I was excited to try something new, and something that isn’t chicken on its menu.
I walked up to the counter and ordered a Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Biscuit. I’ve never had my favorite breakfast sandwich on a biscuit before.
I unwrapped the foil that the steaming hot BEC was hidden in. The smell instantly makes my mouth water.
I pick up the sandwich and my hands capture the grease of it all. The biscuit is extra flakey and warm, breaking apart in my hands. For $3.49, I’m totally okay with it.
I take a bite and I know I’m sold. The cheese is melted nicely over a hefty amount of scrambled eggs. The best part — the bacon is extra crispy. Major key.
The sandwich as a whole embraces the buttery, cheesy, and crispy aspect that I look for in a BEC. My only regret is, I wish I tried this sooner.
Chick-fil-A trumps Shake Shack in this taste-test by a landslide. Going into this I had higher expectations for Shake Shack, yet it was the chicken chain that won the battle. Chick-fil-A takes the win by being the more indulgent and satisfying choice. It definitely it is worth waking up for.
