Throughout the past month, I have heard lots about a new brunch hot spot in Columbia. Of course, I had to investigate. Naturally the name The Devine Cinnamon Roll Deli intrigued me as much as the positive feedback I’d been hearing.
When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by the sweet smell of cinnamon and discovery. I knew it was going to be a good day. I thought, “This must’ve been what Columbus’ discovery felt like.”
The menu was exciting and overwhelming. There were breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, paninis, and none other than the list of famous cinnamon rolls. I felt my research trip would be maximized with a sandwich and a specialty cinnamon roll.
With about eight different specialty rolls, decisions had to be made. I went with the bourbon caramel roll.
My roommate, who I made come with me so I didn’t look too lonely, got the black pepper bacon maple glaze.
I also ordered the Big Max sandwich (a bacon, egg, and cheese with whole grain mustard, yum). Plus, you get a mini cinnamon roll with any food item you order. I don’t know how I fit all of this into my stomach, but it was a worldly experience.
After I saw the light at the end of the tunnel (because I had definitely died and gone to heaven), I got the chance to talk to Jodi, the owner.
Jodi has been in the restaurant business for a very long time. She even had her own food truck at one point. However, on a trip to Hawaii she had a revelation that Hawaiian sweet bread would make excellent cinnamon rolls. Attempting to mix her New York restaurant roots and her kids’ love of cinnamon rolls, the deli was then born.
A portion of the restaurant funds also go to the SC Humane Society. They feature local South Carolina art in store that is available for purchase. She and her son are excited for the future ahead. I for one, am excited to go back for many meals.
