With fall right around the corner, it’s hard not to get excited about fuzzy sweaters and fall flavors, but summer’s not quite over yet. Conveniently, watermelon season runs all summer long. So get your last taste of watermelon while you still can and make these frozen treats to help you savor the last bit of summer.
1. Frozen Watermelon Kabobs
This could be practically made with any fruit and all you need is a small spherical ice cream scoop or a knife. Just string on small spheres or cubes of watermelon (like above) onto kabob sticks and freeze them for a quick serving of fruit on a summer’s day.
2. Watermelon Sorbet
It sounds complicated, but all you need to do is throw some water, sugar, lime juice and watermelon into a food processor or blender and freeze to make watermelon sorbet. It’s easy, peasy, watermelon squeeze-y.
3. Watermelon Slush
This recipe is essentially a more liquefied version of the watermelon sorbet. You need pretty much the same ingredients and same equipment, but instead of eating it with a spoon, all you need to do is sip and relax.
4. Watermelon Lime Pops
These watermelon pops are a pretty versatile and lots of different ingredients including other fruit can be incorporated into the mix. You can make it as easy as freezing a mix of watermelon and lime on a stick or get fancy and start adding layers of kiwi and yogurt to a blended watermelon mix. Either way, you’re in for a cool treat.
5. Frozen Watermelon Margarita
Another classic summer drink is a cold glass of frozen margarita. Why not spice it up by mixing in some frozen chunks of watermelon? The added sweetness will be a perfect balance to the tartness of the lime juice.
6. Mint Watermelon Smoothie
All you need is five ingredients to quench your thirst in the most refreshing way possible with this mint and watermelon smoothie. It’s also a great way to use up over or underripe watermelon that you might otherwise be throwing away. So get your blender out and blend away.
7. Watermelon Granita
It seems like you can make just about any of these recipes with some frozen watermelon and lime, and this granita is no different. Granita is fancy talk for shaved ice and requires just blending and freezing a layer of a watermelon-lime concoction. After a couple of hours in the freezer, scrape off some of the frozen layer and enjoy.
8. Frozen Watermelon Vodka Shots
This recipe was featured on Spoon’s 5 O’Clock Friday series. Drinking vodka from a frozen watermelon shot glass and eating Sour Patch Watermelons as a chaser? Enough said.
9. Watermelon Ice Cream Cake
Saving the best for last, this watermelon ice cream cake might be a tad more complex, but it’s totally worth it. How can combining three types of ice cream and sponge cake not be good?
10. (Actual) Watermelon Cake
Just kidding. It’s not made of ice cream but this is the ultimate watermelon taken to the next level. All you need to give it some pizzazz is some cool whip, almonds and extra berries on top and you’ll have your very own slice of heaven in no time.
