7 Fruits and Vegetables You Should Be Eating in July

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at BU chapter.

It’s easy to forget that produce is meant to be harvested based on optimal seasons of production in certain regions. Whether you’re frequenting the grocery store like you do year-round or at a farmer’s market this July, consider eating these fruits and vegetables. The flavor profiles and quality are maximized during the month of July as they are “in season”, eat up.

1. Avocado

Avocados are imported to the U.S. from Mexico year-round, but July is their peak season in California. Avocados are meant for greatness beyond guacamole and toast, try this bacon, egg, cheese and avocado brunch ring.

2. Corn

Corn is one of the most interesting foods on the planet, in my opinion. Just read Michael Pollan’s timeless classic, “Omnivore’s Dilemma”, and you’ll never look at it the same again. A zucchini corn salad is the perfect use of summer produce.

3. Berries

Berries of all varieties are best (and cheapest) around July. Try making this healthy strawberry cobbler, or a coconut blueberry cake.

4. Summer Squash

The summer squash is technically a swollen ovary of its plant. Despite that unsettling visualization, try using it in a dessert or for breakfast with this wholesome, gluten-free and plant-based zucchini bread.

5. Greens

All kinds of lettuce, herbs, and cruciferous greens are at their prime in the summer. Butterhead lettuce tacos make a great swap for #TacoTuesday.

6. Radishes

Unlike a lot of produce, radishes aren’t typically found in grocery stores year-round. Check out these 5 reasons to eat them while they’re around this summer.

7. Tomatoes

The heavily mistaken fruit grows abundantly in July, especially on the East Coast. Use this time to learn to make your own tomato sauce.
