Why the New Frostalicious is a Must Visit in Westwood

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UCLA chapter.

Remember the shaved ice you’d have as a kid? You’re probably thinking of those cones of ice chunks and flavoring and how good they tasted at the time. Fast forward to now, that doesn’t sound so appealing anymore. Good thing Frostalicious isn’t like any other shaved ice, ice cream or frozen yogurt place you’ve ever been to, because it’s going to blow those other places out of the water.

Ellen Liao, the creator of Frostalicious, has taken her Taiwanese heritage and brought the popular Asian desert of Taiwanese shaved ice to Westwood. Along with opening this shop, Liao has also created a new (patent pending) self serve shaved ice machine that is not only more sanitary, but allows normal people like you and I to serve shaved ice to ourselves.

This brilliant technology that took years to develop has resulted in some very tasty shaved ice. Popular flavors like vanilla, mango, and green tea are available as well as speciality flavors like watermelon and strawberry, so you’re bound to find a flavor for what you’re in the mood for. After you choose one (or more) flavors, you get to choose from a huge selection of toppings, like you would at a frozen yogurt shop. The toppings range from boba, to fresh fruits and other sweets like chocolate chips, so you can make it as simple or as complicated as you want.

Then you get to dig in. Even though it’s called Taiwanese shaved ice, for me it tasted like very light and fluffy ice cream. It was filling, but not heavy, so if you’re lactose intolerant then this is definitely a great shop to check out. The flavors were on point and worked really well with the toppings tried (like the tasty hand-made mochi).
