There’s nothing better to do when the weather gets cold and the sun sets an hour earlier than to light a fresh candle. You could open any number of seasonal scents like pumpkin, cinnamon, or apple. But if you’re looking for something a little bit more unique, then perhaps you would be interested in Trader Joe’s new, limited-edition Can of Corn Scented Candle. Yes, that’s right. Corn. If you’re corn-fused, so are we. But Trader Joe’s is no stranger to viral products, and the corn candle seems to be yet another certified hit on the internet.
What is the candle?
It would be easy to mistake the Can of Corn candle with a real can of corn, as Trader Joe’s has modeled the candle’s design on their actual Whole Kernel Corn can, complete with a yellow label, bold green text, and a silver can. But instead of 9 ounces of corn, you get 9 ounces of candle.
How can you get the corn candle?
The corn candle is a limited-edition product, likely here for the late fall and holiday season, so if you want a candle that will pair perfectly with your Thanksgiving feast, then it might be a good idea to grab one soon before they’re gone. The candles are ringing in at $5.99 a can.
Does the candle actually smell like corn?
While the candle is in a corn can, and officially called the Can of Corn Scented Candle, the actual scent is “sweet cornbread.” And since people have been stalking TJ’s in search of the new candle, the reviews are in as to what the candle actually smells like, for better or worse.
Before being lit, the candle apparently really does smell like cornbread, with one user, @rose.buds saying, “it smells like warm cinnamon cornbread.” Others said it smelled like “a popcorn flavored jellybean,” “vanilla,” or just simply like corn.
After being lit, reviewers reported the smell being somewhat faint. As for whether or not it smelled good or like the cornbread scent it promised, the reviews were surprisingly conflicting. Some were obsessed with the smell and couldn’t get enough of the candle, like user @divined888 who said, “it has a buttery-sweet-warm kinda feel and smell to it.” A number of reviewers couldn’t stop smelling the candles and highly recommended them to fellow corn lovers. Others were more critical or disappointed, like @gregsguides who said, “This does not smell like corn to me at all. This smells more like candy” and @traderjoescostcoobsessed who said, “It smells like wax with a hint of popcorn.” Aw shucks.
Is the candle a corny example of style over substance? It might just be one of those instances where you really do have to try the candle out for yourself. Either way, most on the internet were in love with the candle’s design and even if it doesn’t smell good, the corn candle could work as a fun, fall decor item. Just make sure to grab the real corn when you’re trying to serve up creamed corn or cornbread for the holidays.
