Foodstuffs: A Market of Springtime Treats

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Northwestern chapter.

Try something new this spring! Instead of taking the Intercampus South to enjoy Main Street eateries, jump on the Ryan Field shuttle heading North to Central Street to find Evanston’s hidden gem: Foodstuffs. Tucked in the row of quaint shops on Central, this impressive lunch spot has plenty of springtime meals and treats that will keep you coming back for more.

At first glance, Foodstuffs looks like mini market, but as you browse through the store, you will soon realize that there is a small seating area in the back. But with its convenient location across from Howell Park, a trip to Foodstuffs can lead to an even better impromptu picnic when that seating area may be full. This eatery has something for everyone — a salad bar, a sandwich and panini station, a butcher’s counter, a prepared foods section and plenty of mouthwatering dessert options. Antiques scattered around the store give it a homey vibe; old books line the shelves at the back, and candy jars and flower pots spruce up the old wooden tables.

Foodstuffs is a salad lover’s heaven: you can “make your own,” choosing from a multitude of fresh ingredients, or pick from an extensive menu of suggested salads. All salads are made-to-order to ensure freshness. One favorite springtime dish is the very berry antioxidant salad: a spinach salad with broccoli, beets, edamame, blueberries, very berry antioxidant mix and fat free raspberry vinaigrette. Light, yet full of juicy flavor, this salad makes for a refreshing treat. For those looking for a more substantial meal, try the protein plus salad: romaine lettuce, grilled all-natural chicken breast, eggs, broccoli, garbanzo beans, red quinoa, edamame, beets, sunflower seeds and balsamic vinaigrette. If neither of these satisfy your craving, build your own spinach, arugula, romaine or mixed greens salad, specially catered to your taste.

In the mood for a hearty sandwich instead? Foodstuffs has got you covered with its extensive sandwich and panini menu. Our favorites include the skinny caprese: a whole wheat wrap filled with grilled chicken breast, fresh mozzarella, tomato basil, spinach, artichoke hearts and balsamic vinaigrette. Vegetarians will savor the G.H. special: avocado, dried cranberries, tomatoes, onions, hummus, cucumbers and spinach on 100% whole grain bread. Above all, the friendly staff is dedicated to helping you create your ideal lunch, so don’t be shy when ordering. Any salad or sandwich ingredient can be substituted or customized.

Those avoiding gluten will also find an array of options at Foodstuffs. Many items located throughout the store are labeled gluten-free, so stock up before heading back to campus. Apart from the gourmet sandwiches and salads, be sure to check out the market’s homemade ice cream and delicious baked goods (we recommend the monster bars!). Although all of these tasty options are a little further from campus than downtown Evanston, the springtime walk to Central Street is beautiful, and the food on the other end is definitely worth the trip.
